[Movie] Bates Motel Season 1 Review: Meet Norma and Norman Bates (ENG/ESP)

Good afternoon, friends of Hive and Scrobble Life. This is my first time posting here—I hope I don't make any mistakes—and I want to thank @acidyo for helping me join this fantastic community that I have yet to fully discover and explore; thanks for the patience! To kick things off, I want to review a series I’m currently rewatching: Bates Motel, starring the brilliant Freddie Highmore (also known for The Good Doctor) and Vera Farmiga. Bates Motel is a five-season series available on Amazon Prime. It is inspired by the fictional character Norman Bates, and the story begins with his youth. In the first season, Norma and Norman Bates—a mother and son with an incredibly close bond—move to a small town to open a motel. They have fled a terrible accident that claimed the life of Norman’s father and are determined to build a new life and create new opportunities, but life isn't that simple. Norman is a somewhat atypical, introverted, and odd boy, yet shortly after arriving, he forms special friendships with two girls: Bradley, a very pretty girl with a rebellious streak, and Emma, a classmate suffering from a serious illness who carries an oxygen tank. Norma struggles with her beloved son drifting away, partly because she desperately needs his help to get the motel up and running; furthermore, she treats Norman as if he were much younger and is excessively overprotective of him. However, a nasty incident occurs almost immediately upon their arrival: the motel's former owner refuses to accept the new owners and attacks Norma, raping her. She defends herself and kills him—a terrible start to their new life—forcing her and Norman to hide the body and clean up the scene. Unfortunately, the man's disappearance does not go unnoticed, and a particularly diligent sheriff begins to investigate, causing various problems for Norma, Norman, and their motel-in-the-making.

But this isn't the town's only problem. Bradley's father is also in a bad car accident and burned to death. This small town seems to hide many secrets, including some shady businesses. Norman seems to be struggling to navigate this new life, which began with corpses, dark incidents, and illegal activities. The situation becomes more complicated when his brother Dylan arrives, who has a terrible relationship with his mother and immediately becomes involved with shady characters in the town. Meanwhile, Norman makes mistakes and begins to notice his own oddities. He has kept the murdered man's belt as a macabre souvenir, and then he finds a book of obscene sketches of tortured women, suggesting a sex slavery ring exists in this timid town. Meanwhile, to divert suspicion, Norma begins a sexual relationship with a policeman who, however, seems to be involved in the slavery ring, and Norma and her friend Emma are determined to expose him. I don't want to give away too many spoilers, so now I'll leave room for my reflections on this series.

Pero este no es el único problema del pueblo. El padre de Bradley también sufre un grave accidente automovilístico y muere quemado. Este pequeño pueblo parece ocultar muchos secretos, incluidos algunos negocios turbios. Norman parece tener dificultades para adaptarse a esta nueva vida, que comenzó con cadáveres, sucesos oscuros y actividades ilegales. Honestly, I really enjoyed the first season; it’s where you get to know the well-developed characters and see the story's various dynamics take shape. The unhealthy bond between mother and son is particularly unsettling and heavily emphasized here, highlighting Norma’s authoritarian and overbearing nature; at the same time, we begin to witness the process that will eventually turn Norman Bates into a monster. The season moves at a brisk pace and hooks the viewer right from the start, packing in plenty of dark, tragic events. The atmosphere is grim and gritty—something I appreciated, as it perfectly captures the show's setting and the town's web of secrets and crimes. In my opinion, it’s a solid first season—perhaps the best of the entire series—though I’ll discuss the subsequent seasons in future posts. See you soon, blog friends! If you love series about killers—shows that are unsettling and a bit dark—you absolutely have to watch Bates Motel!

Sinceramente, disfruté mucho de la primera temporada; es ahí donde conoces a unos personajes bien desarrollados y ves cómo cobran forma las diversas dinámicas de la historia. El vínculo enfermizo entre madre e hijo resulta especialmente inquietante y se enfatiza enormemente, poniendo de relieve la naturaleza autoritaria y dominante de Norma; al mismo tiempo, empezamos a presenciar el proceso que acabará convirtiendo a Norman Bates en un monstruo. La temporada avanza a buen ritmo y engancha al espectador desde el principio, ofreciendo una gran cantidad de sucesos oscuros y trágicos. La atmósfera es sombría y cruda —algo que valoré positivamente—, ya que captura a la perfección el entorno de la serie y la red de secretos y crímenes del pueblo. En mi opinión, es una primera temporada sólida —quizás la mejor de toda la serie—, aunque hablaré de las siguientes temporadas en futuras publicaciones. ¡Hasta pronto, amigos del blog!
