Castlevania - The Emerged Winner Among a List of Unending Favorites

At this point, choosing one out of all the amazing movies I’ve watched, should be a standard ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’ question. I say this because while the question might seem simple as it relates to an individual, it’s one of the hardest questions for those who have watched so many good movies and those that have a list of favourites.

For most of today, a response to this prompt, occupied much of my thoughts. I thought to myself, should I write about The Great Doctor - the series I didn’t think would be so good but ended up wowing me? Should I write about ‘Castlevania’ - the series that had me shedding tears at the thought of it coming to an end? Or should I write about ‘What happens in Vegas?’ - the romcom that drew me into the genre of romcoms. There were just too much to choose from so, I decided to use the paper way out, where I wrote a list of titles on paper, wrapped them, and shuffled them in my palms. Then, with eyes closed, I chose one out of it, which happened to be Castlevania.

Castlevania, is a fantasy animation that follows three skilled individuals, fighting against Dracula who unleashed hordes of demons on earth, after his wife was wrongly accused then killed. Having different reasons to fight, the trio comes together, utilizing their various powers, to subdue Dracula and his horde of demons. While it’s mainly an action drama, other genres were fit into it, making it more entertaining and unputdownable.

There was the comedy. Anyone who is well versed in the world of Japanese animations, knows that an animation is incomplete without it being laced with comedy. I particularly loved the hilarious scenes, notwithstanding the fact that it’s been quite a while since I watched said series. For instance, there was a scene where a character was pranked by another in the series, and i had begun crying because I felt the pain for all she stood to lose, if the prank was real, and when I realized it was a prank, I laughed out loud, with tears still streaming down my face. Makes me smile simply remembering how I felt at that moment.

To think that I didn’t trust the person who recommended this series, and began it with so much skepticism. I got to watch it, and I must say, I haven’t seen so much series with storylines that remained the same from the beginning to the end. There’s even the fact that I got a sense of direction from the first episode, but that aside, it was so nice finally getting to watch a series where we didn’t have to battle a new realization every season.

The characters here were so loveable. You know that dumb thing writers do when they need a cause for conflict at the end of a show, and then they make the characters completely dumb and oblivious to everything? There was nothing of the such here. The characters actions flowed as beautifully as it did from the onset. This series, in its entirety, didn’t make me feel like I was brain-rotting at any point. All I felt was pure intrigue, and a satisfied quest for entertainment.

It feels so good, talking about this movie after a while. As you can tell, I absolutely enjoyed it. If you’re into Japanese animations, do watch this one. It was so worth my while, I believe it would be worth yours also. Lest I forget, this animation is as bloody as they come, so if you detest gore, you may like to proceed with caution.

Thanks for reading.
