The Odyssey: Christopher Nolan Made Me Love the Cinema Again (eng-tr)

Last weekend, I went to watch The Odyssey with my younger brother. We had been waiting for this movie for a long time. My brother is also a big cinema lover, so when the movie finally came to theaters, we did not want to wait. We went on Saturday, and even before the movie started, I could feel the excitement. The theater was almost full. I took some photos before the movie because it was really nice to see so many people in a cinema again.

Geçen hafta sonu erkek kardeşimle birlikte The Odyssey filmini izlemeye gittik. Bu filmi uzun zamandır merakla bekliyorduk. Kardeşim de tam bir sinema tutkunu olduğu için film vizyona girer girmez çok fazla beklemek istemedik. Cumartesi günü gittik ve film daha başlamadan heyecanı hissedebiliyordum. Salon neredeyse tamamen doluydu. Filmden önce birkaç fotoğraf çektim çünkü uzun zaman sonra bir sinema salonunu bu kadar dolu görmek gerçekten çok güzeldi.

Since streaming platforms like Netflix became popular, I think going to the cinema has changed a lot. We can watch almost everything at home now. But some movies remind us why cinemas are still special. The Odyssey is definitely one of them. The big screen, the sound, the music and the huge landscapes made the experience completely different. Christopher Nolan has done it again. I loved this movie. Really, I loved it.

Netflix gibi dijital platformlar yaygınlaştığından beri sinemaya gitme alışkanlığımızın çok değiştiğini düşünüyorum. Artık neredeyse her şeyi evimizde izleyebiliyoruz. Ama bazı filmler bize sinemanın neden hâlâ özel olduğunu hatırlatıyor. The Odyssey kesinlikle onlardan biri. Büyük ekran, sesler, müzik ve o devasa manzaralar deneyimi tamamen farklı hale getiriyor. Christopher Nolan yine yapacağını yapmış. Ben bu filme bayıldım. Gerçekten tek kelimeyle bayıldım.

Before watching the movie, I wanted to know a little more about the original story. The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic traditionally connected to Homer. It has 24 books and around 12,000 lines. The story follows Odysseus after the Trojan War and his very long and difficult journey back home to Ithaca. He spends ten years trying to return home after already fighting for ten years in the Trojan War. Knowing this before the movie made the story even more interesting for me.

Filmi izlemeden önce orijinal hikâye hakkında biraz bilgi edinmek istedim. Odysseia, geleneksel olarak Homeros’a atfedilen Antik Yunan destanıdır. 24 bölümden ve yaklaşık 12 bin dizeden oluşur. Hikâye, Truva Savaşı’nın ardından Odysseus’un ülkesi İthaka’ya dönmeye çalışırken yaşadığı çok uzun ve zorlu yolculuğu anlatır. On yıl süren Truva Savaşı’nın ardından evine dönebilmesi de yaklaşık on yıl sürer. Filme girmeden önce bunları bilmek hikâyeyi benim için daha da ilginç hale getirdi.

And I have to say something about Troy. I loved those scenes. I will not give spoilers, but the atmosphere, the soldiers and especially the scenes connected with the Trojan Horse were amazing to watch on a big screen. Sometimes everything looked very real, and a few minutes later I felt like I was inside an old myth. This balance between reality and mythology was probably one of my favorite things about the movie.

Ve Truva hakkında ayrıca bir şey söylemem gerekiyor. O sahnelere bayıldım. Spoiler vermeyeceğim ama atmosfer, askerler ve özellikle Truva Atı’yla bağlantılı sahneleri büyük ekranda izlemek inanılmazdı. Bazen her şey son derece gerçek görünüyordu, birkaç dakika sonra ise kendimi eski bir destanın içindeymişim gibi hissediyordum. Gerçeklikle mitoloji arasındaki bu geçiş sanırım filmde en sevdiğim şeylerden biriydi.

Some scenes honestly scared me. Not because this is a horror movie. It is something completely different. There are moments when you know what you are watching is mythology, but at the same time you think, “Maybe people thousands of years ago really imagined the world like this.” That feeling made some scenes much stronger for me. I don’t want to explain them because I really don’t want to spoil the experience.

Bazı sahnelerde gerçekten ödüm koptu. Ama film korku filmi olduğu için değil. Tamamen başka bir histen bahsediyorum. İzlediğiniz şeyin mitolojik olduğunu biliyorsunuz ama aynı zamanda “Belki binlerce yıl önce insanlar dünyayı gerçekten böyle hayal ediyordu” diye düşünüyorsunuz. The movie is almost three hours long, and there was a break in our screening. Normally, during a movie break, I don’t feel a big need to get up and walk. But this time I realized that I had been watching the screen without moving for so long that my legs actually hurt! I had been completely focused on the story. During the break, I immediately stood up and walked around a little. For me, that says a lot about how much the movie pulled me into its world.

Film neredeyse üç saat sürüyor ve bizim gösterimimizde bir ara vardı. Normalde film arasında kalkıp dolaşma ihtiyacı pek hissetmem. Ama bu sefer ekrana o kadar uzun süre hiç kıpırdamadan odaklanmışım ki ara verildiğinde bacaklarımın gerçekten ağrıdığını fark ettim! Hikâyeye tamamen kilitlenmişim. Bu yüzden arada hemen ayağa kalkıp biraz yürüdüm. Bence bu bile filmin beni kendi dünyasının içine ne kadar çektiğini anlatıyor.

I also really liked the cast. There was not one actor who made me think, “Why is this person playing this character?” Everyone felt right for their role. And Matt Damon as Odysseus was excellent. I really enjoyed watching him carry such a huge story. Nolan’s movie is also special technically: IMAX says The Odyssey is the first feature film ever shot entirely with IMAX film cameras. More than two million feet of film were used during production. That probably explains why some of those huge landscapes and action scenes feel so powerful on a cinema screen.

Oyuncu kadrosunu da gerçekten çok beğendim. “Bu oyuncu neden bu rolde, hiç olmamış” dediğim tek bir kişi bile olmadı. Herkes rolüne çok yakışmıştı. Özellikle Odysseus rolündeki Matt Damon çok iyiydi. Böylesine büyük bir hikâyeyi onun üzerinden izlemekten gerçekten keyif aldım. Film teknik açıdan da oldukça özel: IMAX’in verdiği bilgiye göre The Odyssey, tamamı IMAX film kameralarıyla çekilen ilk uzun metrajlı film. Çekimler sırasında iki milyon feet’ten fazla film kullanılmış. Sanırım devasa manzaraların ve aksiyon sahnelerinin sinema ekranında bu kadar güçlü görünmesinin nedenlerinden biri de bu.

And remember what I said about the full cinema? It seems we were definitely not alone. The Odyssey has already passed $700 million at the worldwide box office only 12 days after its release. So yes, this movie really brought people back to theaters. For me, this is exactly the kind of movie that should be watched on a big screen.

Bir de başta salonun neredeyse tamamen dolu olduğunu söylemiştim. Görünen o ki bu konuda kesinlikle yalnız değilmişiz. The Odyssey, vizyona girdikten yalnızca 12 gün sonra dünya çapında 700 milyon dolar gişe hasılatını aşmış durumda. Yani evet, bu film gerçekten insanları yeniden sinema salonlarına getirdi. Bana göre zaten tam da büyük ekranda izlenmesi gereken filmlerden biri.

For me, The Odyssey is not just a movie. It feels like a journey. War, the sea, fear, love, waiting, family, home and the long struggle to return to the people you love… There is so much inside this story. Christopher Nolan took an ancient epic and turned it into a huge cinema experience. If you are thinking about watching it, my recommendation is simple: go to the cinema and watch it on the biggest screen you can. Some movies are good at home. This one deserves the cinema.

Benim için The Odyssey sadece bir film değil, gerçekten bir yolculuk gibiydi. Savaş, deniz, korku, aşk, beklemek, aile, ev ve sevdiğin insanlara geri dönebilmek için verilen uzun mücadele… Bu hikâyenin içinde çok fazla şey var. Christopher Nolan binlerce yıllık bir destanı alıp devasa bir sinema deneyimine dönüştürmüş. İzlemeyi düşünüyorsanız benim tavsiyem çok basit: sinemaya gidin ve mümkün olan en büyük ekranda izleyin. Bazı filmleri evde izlemek yeterli olabilir. Ama bu film sinemayı hak ediyor.
