I know I will probably be crucified for this, but I don’t like Dr. Who...there….I said it! Lololol It’s not that I haven’t tried to like it and I’ve given it numerous opportunities to connect with me, it just isn’t happening. Now that I have that out of the way, I can work on this week’s CineTV contest and attempt to expound upon my favorite sci-fi series. This is going to be a tough one for sure!

I spent so much of my youth being enthralled by sci-fi television shows and some of the ones that really stick out in my memories are The Incredible Hulk, Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, Buck Rogers, and so, so many others that I enjoyed greatly over the years. But when I really contemplate which one was my favorite, I keep landing back on Battlestar Galactica.

I think my fascination with this series is rooted in the inherent drama of constantly searching for a permanent home while aboard a spaceship accompanied by smaller ships in the fleet. There is always a heightened sense of urgency and danger could unfold at any given moment and something in me loves that build up and suspense. The story follows the commander and crew of a massive Battlestar spaceship and a hundred or so other smaller ships as they attempt to find a home world after humanity is almost completely wiped out by evil robots, the Cylons. I don’t think I will ever forget the signature sounds of the cylons and the red light emanating from where their “eyes” would be!

The cylons were relentless in their pursuit of the remaining humans and would literally stop at nothing to ensure their destruction. They are represented as cold, calculating and completely dedicated to the destruction of mankind and they are aided by a villainous human traitor, Baltar, who was expertly played by John Colicos.

In addition to the constant built in suspense, the characters were very unique and entertaining and the relationships between the characters were instrumental in driving the storyline. While many people had Commander Adama, played by Lorne Green, or Captain Apollo as their favorite, mine, of course, was Lt. Starbuck, a bit of a wild card and free spirit who was also an amazing fighter pilot. These characters were portrayed by some of the finest actors in television history and I enjoy the original 1978 version of the show much, much more than the more recent re-boot.

I think the true hook of the show for me was the ability of this diverse group of survivors working together in an attempt to save and resurrec the remaining humanity against the extreme odds of defeat they were constantly facing. I think this, like so many themes in sci-fi, is a perfect example for us all, as we could all use a bit more cooperation and less conflict…lolol Thanks so much for taking the time to read my post and remember that I love you all and each of you have the power to save humanity within you….sometimes with just a small talk with a stranger in a coffee shop!

There are a ton of Dr. Who fans that will be seriously upset! I'm not one of them but I can hear them screaming already. :)

Yeah, they are pretty fanatical bunch lololol I was hoping to trigger some, but then I remembered that the vast majority of everything written on hive goes unread and just upvoted

And what do you think of the Newer 2004 - 2009 BSG?

I definitely did not enjoy it as much as the original, but then again I have the nostalgia of a kid behind the old one lololo

One thing I loved about the newer version that may be a minor detail to some, was how they shot the sequences in space with silence and a bit of a camera tremble. Something about that was pretty cool to me.

I think the newer version was produced more for the grown up adult audience that was already familiar with the original. Grittier, realistic, deeper characters, not knowing who is the real enemy, moral dilemmas, etc.

I get it. So you're that other audience that won't grow up and get just as much entertainment out of Cylons become floating spare parts. "BOOM!" Bring back the sound effects.

I did get enjoyment out of the new series and loved how they approached it, I just think I enjoyed the original a bit more.
