Yesterday I came across a very interesting article by our friend @pedrobrito2004 in which he talks about a very attractive international contest which apparently has no major barriers of entry and which began on March 9th of this year. The competition is called "Future Vision XPRIZE" and is international in scope. And therefore, due to these facilities for participation available to everyone in the world, I must admit that this excited me a lot and inspired me to want to know more about how to participate.

Yeah, I think it's quite an interesting challenge for many of us, and it's truly worth taking a closer look to study and evaluate what our chances would be of winning one of its juicy prizes. But now, to learn more about this international competition, I invite you to click «here» and read what the author of this article has already said with great detail in its content. Because here, I am nothing more than another spokesperson for this formidable initiative. Just check this out and judge it by yourself.

Alright! And now that that's been said, let's continue with what the headline of this post indicates and which in fact has a lot to do with the long comment I made to @pedrobrito2004 in his post about this temptress and appealing international competition.

Because in this long commentary I also decided to invite a trio of good friends in Hive to give me their opinion and help me determine if a defensive pessimist like me would have any chance of winning one of the prizes in this competition if I also had their participation and collaboration as a team. Because they are definitely much more expert on this subject than I am and undoubtedly more optimistic than I am too.

And for the rest of you, who also might be reading this post. Perhaps you could also help me determine if a defensive pessimist like me would have any chance of winning one of the prizes in this international competition by simply answering this question below. For which I also will provide some basic concepts about what the question is about.

¿Are you a Functional Melancholic, a Defensive Pessimist or neither?

A functional melancholic is a person with persistent, low-level sadness (dysthymia) who manages to function daily. While a defensive pessimist is a high-achiever who uses low expectations and worst-case scenario planning to manage anxiety and enhance performance. The core difference is that melancholy is a depressive mood state, while defensive pessimism is a goal-oriented cognitive strategy.

Functional Melancholic (Depressed Affect).

  • Affect: Persistent sadness, hopelessness and a heavy-hearted, "disconsolate" demeanor.

  • Motivation: Often driven by a sense of helplessness or passive acceptance of failure.

  • Outcome: Functions despite feeling low, but tends to experience high levels of rumination and anxiety even after situations pass.

  • Personality: Often defenseless and seeks affirmation.

Defensive Pessimist (Cognitive Strategy).

  • Affect: High anxiety before an event, but not necessarily chronic depression.

  • Motivation: Driven by a need to perform well and reduce anxiety through planning.

  • Outcome: Uses negative thinking as a tool to prepare for potential pitfalls, leading to success and high achievement.

  • Personality: Action-oriented; they take proactive steps to avoid the scenarios they fear.

Key Distinctions.

Defensive pessimists set low expectations to create a "safety net" for their performance, whereas functional melancholics have low expectations because they anticipate failure or despair. Defensive pessimists are generally not truly depressed, but rather anxious, whereas melancholics grapple with a diminished capacity for joy.

Oh yeah, go ahead and leave your opinion in the comments section if you think you or I would be able to win one of the prizes if we participated in this international contest and competition. But Hey! Only if you promise and assure me that you have read and consumed in its entirety all the content I have shared in this post. ¿Okay?
