Reseña: El brutalista // Review: The brutalist
Si bien hay películas largas, que te obligan a estar bastante horas en la butaca del cine, es la primera vez que recuerde, que en medio de la misma, se de un intermedio de 15 minutos e incluso con un contador. Este título, con ese y otros temas que detallare, me sorprendió. Estrenada hace poco en mi país, siendo su director Brady Corbet.
While there are long movies that force you to stay for hours in the theater, it is the first time I remember that in the middle of the movie, there is a 15-minute intermission and even a counter. This title, with this and other issues that I will detail, surprised me. Recently released in my country, its director is Brady Corbet.
Sinopsis: Lazlo Toth, es un arquitecto que logró sobrevivir a las crueldades de la 2da guerra mundial, pasa a mudarse a Estados Unidos, donde lo recibe un familiar. Es en una oportunidad de trabajo, que conoce a Harrison Lee Van Buren, un excéntrico millonario, que le ofrece que desarrolle uno de los mayores proyectos de su vida, y que lo encadenara a unas duras circunstancias.
Synopsis: Lazlo Toth, an architect who managed to survive the cruelties of World War II, moves to the United States, where he is received by a relative. It is in a job opportunity that he meets Harrison Lee Van Buren, an eccentric millionaire, who offers him to develop one of the biggest projects of his life, and that will chain him to some hard circumstances.
Entre las corrientes arquitectónicas hay una llamada brutalismo, que sus construcciones se caracterizan por construcciones minimalistas que muestran los materiales de construcción desnudos y los elementos estructurales sobre el diseño decorativo. Esta película busca hacer un símil con la historia que nos muestra. Donde veremos a unos personajes en toda la extensión de su ser, sin ocultar nada, lo malo y lo bueno de ellos mismos.
Among the architectural currents there is one called brutalism, whose constructions are characterized by minimalist buildings that show the bare building materials and structural elements over the decorative design. This film seeks to make a simile with the story that shows us. Where we will see characters in the full extent of their being, without hiding anything, the bad and the good of themselves.
A su vez, veremos como unos refugiados son tratados como extraños y como se menciona en una parte, sólo son tolerados. Solo usados para obtener ciertas cosas, sin realmente dejarlos ingresar a su comunidad o círculos sociales. Lazlo Toth nos muestra con la obra que realiza, algo más allá de las circunstancias o su camino, que el objetivo es completar un fin.
At the same time, we will see how some refugees are treated as strangers and as mentioned in one part, they are only tolerated. Only used to obtain certain things, without really letting them enter their community or social circles. Lazlo Toth shows us with the work he does, something beyond the circumstances or his path, that the goal is to complete an end.
La fotografía en muchos aspectos es algo inolvidable, desde las primeras tomas, cuando el protagonista llega a Nueva York, hasta los planos de la mansión, las canteras y varios momentos que durarán en los espectadores. La actuación de Adrien Brody, como el protagonista, me ha parecido de lo mejor; además destacó a Joe Alwyn como Harry Lee Van Buren, me impresionó su trabajo. Si bien la música no es lo esencial, logra acompañar bien ciertas escenas, dándoles mayor significado o drama.
The cinematography in many aspects is something unforgettable, from the first shots, when the protagonist arrives in New York, to the shots of the mansion, the quarries and several moments that will last in the viewers. Adrien Brody's performance, as the protagonist, I thought was one of the best; Joe Alwyn as Harry Lee Van Buren also stood out, I was impressed with his work. Although the music is not essential, it manages to accompany certain scenes well, giving them more meaning or drama.
Sin duda está entre mis favoritas del año. Si te gusta la premisa y tienes el aguante para ver una película de 3 horas y media, es bastante recomendable.
It is definitely among my favorites of the year. If you like the premise and have the stamina to watch a 3.5 hour movie, it is highly recommended.

I found this one a bit overrated but I'm glad that I watched it in the cinema as otherwise I probably wouldn't have made it through the 3Hour+ Lenght with distractions around me. Nice to see you liked it along with many other people though!
