Hay una serie de documentales que se ha ido estrenando en Netflix, todas llamadas Fiasco total, y cada una referida a un evento que se consideró desastroso o peculiar. Ya he visto varias, y a mi parecer son bastante entretenidas. En este caso, el documental se refiere a un meme viral que tomó por asalto Facebook en su momento. Se estrenó este año, siendo director Jack Macinnes.

There is a series of documentaries that has been released on Netflix, all called Trainwreck, each referring to an event that was considered disastrous or peculiar. I have already seen several, and in my opinion, they are quite entertaining. In this case, the documentary refers to a viral meme that took Facebook by storm at the time. It was released this year, directed by Jack Macinnes.

Sinopsis: Matty Roberts, un joven adicto al shitposting en internet, decide crear un evento en Facebook, donde llama a asaltar el área 51 y revelar lo que hay dentro de ese misterioso lugar. Lo que no se esperaba, es que su pequeña broma se volviera uno de los memes virales más llamativos de la internet, que puso en alerta al público, al pueblo cerca del área 51 e incluso a los militares.

Synopsis: Matty Roberts, a young man addicted to shitposting on the internet, decides to create an event on Facebook, where he calls for an assault on Area 51 to reveal what is inside that mysterious place. What he did not expect was that his little joke would become one of the most striking viral memes on the internet, putting the public, the people near Area 51, and even the military on alert.

El documental logra dar un acercamiento cronológico de todos los eventos que comenzaron a ocurrir, desde el posteo del evento en Facebook hasta lo que ocurrió llegada la fecha. Se entrevistaron a varios involucrados: militares, habitantes de la zona, gente que buscó sacarle rédito, influencers y el protagonista principal Matty Roberts.

The documentary manages to give a chronological overview of all the events that began to unfold, from the posting of the event on Facebook to what happened when the date arrived. Several people involved were interviewed: military personnel, local residents, people who sought to profit from it, influencers, and the main protagonist, Matty Roberts.

El asunto es divertido, por lo inédito, y que similar a una bola de nieve, el meme se acabó haciendo más y más grande. Matty si bien no buscaba crear nada tangible al comienzo, comenzó a desarrollar un posible evento musical, y quizás volver el meme una realidad. También vemos el lado contrario, de gobierno y autoridades, preocupados de que tan real se podría volver esa “invasión”.

The subject matter is entertaining because it is unprecedented, and like a snowball, the meme ended up getting bigger and bigger. Although Matty did not seek to create anything tangible at the beginning, he began to develop a possible musical event, perhaps turning the meme into reality. We also see the other side, that of the government and authorities, concerned about how real this “invasion” could become.

La edición es excelente, la sucesión de eventos se siente bastante dinámico, y por mi parte acabé el documental rápidamente. Lo único malo, es que ciertas situaciones no se llegan a esclarecer del todo.

The editing is excellent, the succession of events feels quite dynamic, and I finished the documentary quickly. The only downside is that certain situations are not entirely clear.
