MOVIE REVIEW: Master (2016) – Korean Crime Thriller

Hello everyone, Today I am going to share with you a wonderful South Korean crime thriller movie called Master, produced in 2016, directed by Jo Wi-seok and starring Lee Byung-hoon.

The film follows the story of a fraudulent financial scam, a company called One Network. Despite portraying success to the outside world, the enterprise turns out to be a destructive pyramid scheme scheme that robs thousands of investors of their money.

Public suspicion reaches a point where highly intelligent detective Kim Jae-myung (Gang Dong-won) leads an elite investigation team to investigate the matter. One Network employee Park Jang-gun (Kim Woo-bin) comes to the investigation team as their insider link due to his skills as a hacker. The film showcases a challenging game of border-crossing pursuits that unfold in real time through fraudulent contracts and shifting allegiances.

The people behind Master have crafted an effective and engaging crime drama. The film uses dialogue and strong acting as well as unexpected chase sequences, which create suspenseful energy without unnecessary action-oriented elements. Lee Byung-hoon plays a strangely interesting role in his role that makes the villain character unsettling.

Gang Dong-won brings moral focus to the detective character, while Kim Woo-bin keeps the story unpredictable by playing a character who is between loyalty and survival. The narrative that spans the different environments and locations of deception shows a bit of a slow pace in its central part. The story takes a good turn although some of its dramatic moments were easy to predict in advance. Overall, the film represents a solid thriller with a contemporary message about political corruption and power dynamics. The film stands as a recommended watch for fans of Korean cinema, as well as a deep crime story.
