Movie Reviewing: The Right Way?

Out of hundreds of thousands of topics available to write about, I believe writing about a movie is the easiest one. Well, the way we usually write about a film, watched or not, you will get this impression that movie reviewing on #hive is a piece of cake.

But why?

Okay, first of all, we barely “review” a movie. And I can confidently say 7/10 of content related to a movie under the title “Movie Review: Blah Blah,” there is nothing but the story paraphrased, which you can find any time on Google. My point is, why repeat the plot in your text when it’s already out there, just a click away? Also, parroting the movie summary is kind of boring, and you are killing the readers (I doubt anyone reads that) with your boring details of how the characters escaped death or how sensuous the lip was. Come on; everyone knows the plot if they have watched it. And those who haven’t watched it yet will not pay attention to your content to avoid #spoiler.

So, what should you do?

No, I am not a movie critic and not judging you based on what you write. But it’s a personal observation that I believe will benefit the community as a whole. In my opinion (you are free to ignore it), instead of writing the summary, we should—

Focus on intended message:

Movies, good movies in general (not by IMDb ratings), include powerful messages. All those screenplays are not merely for our entertainment. Sometimes it depicts the social flaws or sometimes helps us understand the deeper meaning of life in a more straightforward but unconventional way.

So, when you are writing about a movie, try to tell us the message you have unearthed from the scenes, plots, and characterisation. It’s far better than reading the plot and wasting time in the process.

Talk about #filmmaking:

Not for amateurs, but you can try. Google is there to help you. Talk about the filmmaking technique the director has used in the movie, if it’s notable. Inform your readers about the technology used, the art behind it, and what makes it more intriguing. Educate the readers; next time anyone watching movies with all those technical knowledge will enjoy it in a different way— a unique way!

Flaws and gems:

Some movies are literally garbage unless you believe every movie has its own segment of spectators. Garbage or not, let’s keep the debate aside for now, even the most flawed movies will have some spectacular scenes to enjoy, messages to comprehend, and characterisation to behold.

Talk about them— what you liked and what not. Explain your statement to make it more constructive and add value to the community.

Elaborate on context:

Dive deep. If the context has any historical influence, let the readers know about it. Gather historical data and compare it with the dramatisation— the readers will appreciate the effort you have put in to make their time reading your content worthwhile.

Don’t take my words for granted!

Ha ha ha….. Like I said, I am not a movie critic or not here to save the movie species from going extinct. It’s my personal observation, and it can go horribly wrong— I admit that. Any opinion supporting or opposing the discussion made above is appreciated. Let’s do it right— we have come this far on hive not to ruin it with blabbering texts.

Peace.

I totally agree with you on this part bhai.. nobody ever wants to know about the movie summary and I also try to avoid this trend while writing any review.. and rest of your suggestions are really good, I always try to follow these things too..

Good to hear you are right on track. It's unfortunate how "movie lovers" tend to put in low effort when it comes to sharing their thoughts about it. And most of them end up narrating the story when the better version is already on the web. I think this practice of writing stories without any thoughtful attachment needs to be changed, either by warnings or direct punishment.
