Dune: Part 2 Delayed
It was just announced that Dune: Part 2 has been pushed back from November 3, 2023 which is just around the corner, to March 15, 2024. I think it is probably surprising because the advertising campaign for this movie is really on a roll. They already released a trailer, behind the scenes photos and they just got a double cover on "Empire" magazine to promote the movie which came out after the pushback announcement, because you cannot undo some things. This creates a bit of an odd situation. It reminds me of the COVID pushbacks which turned most movies into failures.
A lot of movies are being delayed because of the actors strike. The strike means that actors cannot promote their movies, not on social media or press junkets. This is an important part for every movie, but some movies are trying to struggle through it and release their movies regardless. However, Dune: Part 2 really relays heavily on its star power, especially Zendaya who will actually have a big part in this movie unlike the previous one. Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Dave Bautista and Christopher Walken also have both start power and prestige that they can bring to the promotion of the movie. However, even though they carry a lot of weight in the promotional tour I am not sure this was the right decision.
Dune is pretty famous on all its own so it can rely on that. I mean it is one of the best sci-fi books out there and a lot of people really liked the first movie. Pushing back movies makes them feel irrelevant and we might see a wave of movies failing like we had after COVID, because these movies feel like old news. I have a bad feeling that this movie will suffer the same consequences. Especially after starting the heavy promotion without the actors being available, they could have just continued this way. I wish this movie good luck, it will need it. I am still looking forward to its eventual release.
