Last Night in Soho could have been an amazing movie if not for its ending. So I am here to warn you that if you are looking for a great horror movie or a supernatural horror movie to watch this is not it. It's actually more of a thriller. Last Night in Soho was directed and written by Edgar Wright. Edgar Wright is still trying to get his career on track after working on Ant-Man for eight years and eventually stepping down from the movie. I don't think that genre changing at the movie towards the end was a good idea of this movie or his career.

The movie follows Eloise "Ellie" Turner (Thomasin McKenzie) who is a mentally unstable person. Her mother committed suicide when she was very young and now Ellie sees her ghosts all of the time. Since the suicide Ellie has been raised by her grandmother (Rita Tushingham). Ellie is obsessed with the music and style of the sixties and she wants to be a fashion designer. She even goes to college to study fashion. Things don't go so well for her at her dorms so she rents a room inside an old lady's house, Ms. Collins (Diana Rigg). That is the first night where she has a vivid dream where she becomes Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy), a confident and talented young woman who is living in the 60s and trying to build herself a singing career. This vivid dream influences her life deeply. She begins to blossom in every way, including her designing career. However, Sandie's life take a turn for the worst and her life starts leaking into Ellie's life as well. It seems that Ellie is falling apart, but is she hunted or simply having mental breakdown? The answer to this question is actually very surprising.

It sounds pretty good, and it is. Until the movie decides to stop being a horror movie and becomes something else. I am not saying it is a bad something else, it is that the jump is jarring and will most likely leave you disappointed.

There are some great things about this movie. The acting is excellent, I mean Anya Taylor-Joy and Diana Rigg are brilliant. And Thomasin McKenzie manages to hold her own as well. Matt Smith can do no wrong as we know. The movie also has great atmosphere and as you can imagine from the 60s theme, the movie has amazing style and music.

It could have been such a great horror movie, but instead it is just a good movie and one that will leave you wondering what you just saw, and not necessarily in a good way. It is still worth a watch in my opinion, just lower your expectations.

Did you see Last Night in Soho? And if you did, what did you think about it?
