Tetris – Spoiler Free Review
So this movie was a lot more fun and suspenseful than I expected. Also, the name is a bit misleading, this movie is not about the invention of Tetris, but about the war to distribute the game. But apparently Tetris was invented in the USSR during the cold war and the USSR did not like to make business with the West. It is war on all fronts.
Taron Egerton plays Henk Rogers. Henk Rogers markets computer games and he is also a programmer. He runs into Tetris in a showing and decides to make this game his life's mission. Unfortunately for him, he is an honest man and honest people have a hard time in life. Especially, in the very corrupt and crumbling USSR and even in corrupt corporation state of the U.S.A. Everyone wants a piece of the Tetris pie because they recognize its potential and want a piece of the pie. But only one person truly loves the game. Who knew this wonderful simple game had so much drama behind the scenes.
But seriously, there was a lot of drama. So much drama that this movie is more of a thriller than based on a true story movie. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the movie. It's like real life Game of Thrones with everyone trying to stab each other in the back. Both metaphorically and physically. So much better than expected.
For once I can say: thank you to Apple TV for hiring Russian actors to play the roles of Russians. For once, my ears did not hurt when I listened to them speak, and I don't even speak Russian. But I can totally tell when it's a terrible accent, especially if they try to speak in Russian. Thankfully they did not make Matthew Marsh try and speak Russian because it would have sounded terrible next to everyone else who were clearly speaking their native language. This was such a pleasant surprise.
Tetris is not only a fun game, but a fun movie. The movie design is brilliant, it actually incorporates elements of the game into the movie which is super cool. It almost looks like a Nintendo game. It is colorful and fun. The soundtrack is super nostalgic and upbeat. It was so much fun. And there are a few times where the movie really puts an emphasis on its great music. The movie is also really fast paced so there isn't a boring second in it. It just moves from one exciting thing to the next. It also helps that everyone is excellent in this movie, especially Taron Egerton who basically carries this movie on his shoulders. It is a great movie all around.
I put this movie on because I couldn't find anything else to watch with my family that would interest us all and I was super pleasantly surprised. If you have a hard time finding a movie to watch at home, you should totally check Tetris out.
