Babylon (2013) review: The worst part of Hollywood, love it or hate it.

Finally I had the opportunity to see one of the most divisive films that have been released recently: Babylon, for several weeks the internet has waged a strange battle where everyone has collectively tried to define if we are facing a masterpiece or just another pretentious film of the bunch... The reason? Despite a premise that appears to be simple, the runtime of more than three hours and a rather chaotic (albeit intentional) presentation ends up giving us a work that is difficult to process regardless of whether we liked it in the end or not.

Babylon, on the surface, tells the story of several people who live in Hollywood of the 20s, a time that despite being regularly portrayed as innocent and artistically passionate (by the same industry) actually ended up being a cradle for hedonism and excesses where the love for this art existed but it was hardly a priority.

If this premise sounds quite broad, it is because Babylon actually decides to develop it like this, completely abandoning any form of linearity in exchange for a large cast of characters that interchange intermittently and where unfortunately not all of them end up permeating with the same emotional power, thus demonstrating that the idea of narrating several stories simultaneously was a double-edged sword where it is easy to align those viewers who will become frustrated with the lack of a clear plot line... Although of course, many of you might not feel this way about it.

Immersion will be the key to enjoy our long stay, something that is not particularly complicated for those who can appreciate good music, the use of very elaborate sets, well-paced editing and direction, as well as several picturesque performances by stars like Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt and Tobey Maguire.

However, I would like to make it clear that I do not consider it a bad film, and all these complaints are just a product of the state of confusion in which he left me a good portion of the footage, something that ironically I end up considering positive... After all , Babylon wanted to fulfill two tasks at the same time: celebrate the cinema, and attack it with absolute coldness.

What does this mean? That there is something very respectable and magnetic in the film, a direct consequence of the confidence with which it approaches its own premise. Babylon takes full advantage of the medium's capabilities and introduces us to a chaotic and fascinating place.

To be honest, it is the type of film that I would never dare to recommend, but I am personally satisfied with what they showed me, it is vulgar, yes, but it comes from a sincere place and allows us to connect with the passion for cinema from a Optics that many of us could never even have considered.

Finalmente tuve la oportunidad de ver una de las películas más divisivas que se han estrenado recientemente: Babylon, desde hace varias semanas internet ha librado una extraña batalla en dónde todos han tratado de definir colectivamente si estamos ante una obra maestra o simplemente otra cinta pretenciosa más del montón... ¿La razón? A pesar de una premisa que aparenta ser simple, el runtime de más de tres horas y una presentación bastante caótica (Aunque intencional) termina brindándonos una obra que resulta difícil de procesar independientemente de que al final nos haya gustado o no.

Babylon, en la superficie, narra la historia de varias personas que se desenvuelven en el Hollywood de los años 20, una época que a pesar de ser retratada regularmente como inocente y apasionada artísticamente (Por la misma industria) en realidad terminaba siendo una cuna para el hedonismo y los excesos en dónde el amor por el arte existía pero difícilmente era prioridad.

Si esta premisa suena bastante amplia es porque efectivamente Babylon decide desarrollarla así, abandonando totalmente cualquier forma de linearidad a cambio de un gran elenco de personajes que se intercambian de forma intermitente y en dónde lastimosamente no todos terminan calando con la misma potencia emocional, demostrando así que la idea de narrar varias historias simultáneamente fue un arma de doble filo en dónde es fácil alinear a aquellos espectadores que se frustrarán con la falta de un hilo argumental claro.... Aunque por supuesto, muchos de ustedes podrían no sentir esto respecto a ella.

La inmersión será clave para disfrutar de nuestra larga estadía, algo que no se hace particularmente complicado para aquellos que pueden apreciar la buena música, el uso de sets muy elaborados, una edición y dirección con buen ritmo, así como varios performances pintorescos de parte de estrellas de la talla de Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt y Tobey Maguire.

No obstante, me gustaría dejar claro que no la considero una mala película, y todas estas quejas son solo un producto del estado de confusión en el que me dejó una buena porción del metraje, algo que irónicamente termino considerando positivo... Después de todo, Babylon quería cumplir con dos tareas al mismo tiempo: Celebrar el cine, y atacarlo con una frialdad absoluta.

¿Que quiere decir esto? Que existe algo muy respetable y magnético en el filme, consecuencia directa de la confianza con la que aborda su propia premisa. Babylon aprovecha al máximo las capacidades del medio y nos introduce a un lugar caótico y fascinante.

Siendo honesto, es el tipo de películas que nunca me atrevería a recomendar, pero yo personalmente me encuentro satisfecho con lo que me mostraron, es vulgar, si, pero viene de un lugar sincero y permite que conectemos con la pasión por el cine desde una óptica que muchos nunca podríamos siquiera haberlo considerado.
