Beau is Afraid (2023) review: Oedipus would have loved this movie

Finally, the digital version of Beau is afraid was released, a film directed by Ari Aster and starring the excellent Joaquín Phoenix that from the beginning caught everyone's attention, making use of a rather "strange" advertising campaign where few details of his content was revealed, something that obviously caught the attention of many of us.

And it is that it was not for little, the director of Hereditary and Midsommar (Both considered among the best modern horror films, regardless of whether they like them or not) had earned the trust of the audiences, for this very reason the A24 studio decided to give it Free letter with this project, something that at the moment of having seen it will finally let us glimpse that it has its positive and negative points.

If Hereditary and Midsommar played with elements of psychological horror, the traumas of generations and toxic relationships (always imbued with a charming subtlety), Beau is Afraid explores in a much more surreal terrain, something that honestly plays very well with the abundant elements of comedy. that are introduced from the beginning.

Beau is a grown man who lives in a state of perpetual paranoia, and many times, the viewer is given to understand that such fear is very justified... Although the events that transpire and their fidelity is questionable. This fear has been instilled by her mother from the beginning, ensuring that he never strays from her and exists in a state of eternal innocence.

Everything changes when we discover that Beau has a planned trip to visit his mother, and little by little we must see how he is dealing with all the obstacles that come his way.

In essence, we could define "Beau is Afraid" as a modern odyssey, where many recognizable elements of our reality are exaggerated with the purpose of connecting with the irrationality of its own protagonist, at the same time that we have access to very specific fragments. of his past (and even future) to understand why he acts that way.

And although I am happy with this idea and feel that it is implemented correctly, it is also important to recognize that Beau is afraid is a very volatile film and those who are not willing to connect with its themes can fall directly into hatred.

A few days ago I was reviewing "Mother!", a film by Darren Aronofsky that was built as an allegory but failed to find a firm point between exaggeration and subtlety, on the other hand, Ari Aster's latest work is a perfect example of how Following the last option might have helped him a lot.

We're used to follow the typical parameters of the format and it's easy to get upset when a filmmaker seeks to break out of the mold, Aster's bravery in doing just this is what Beau is Afraid deserves to be appreciated, even though deep down, we all know it's not. more than a work of catharsis where a man reflects on the impotence that his mother has caused him.

It's hard to classify Beau is Afraid within a genre, it could well be a black comedy, an adventure movie, or another horror film, I don't recommend it to everyone but it's worth giving it a try for better or worse.

Finalmente se estrenó la versión digital de Beau is afraid, una película dirigida por Ari Aster y protagonizada por el excelente Joaquín Phoenix que desde el principio llamó la atención de todos, haciendo uso de una campaña publicitaria bastante "extraña" en dónde pocos detalles de su contenido se desvelaba, algo que obviamente llamó la atención de muchos de nosotros.

Y es que no era para poco, el director de Hereditary y Midsommar (Ambas consideradas de las mejores películas de terror moderno, independientemente de que los gusten o no) se había ganado la confianza de las audiencias, por esto mismo el estudio A24 decidió darle carta libre con este proyecto, algo que al momento de haberla visto finalmente nos dejara entrever que tiene sus puntos positivos y sus negativos.

Si Hereditary y Midsommar jugaban con elementos de terror psicológico, los traumas generaciones y las relaciones tóxicas (Siempre impregnados con una sutileza encantadora), Beau is Afraid explora en un terreno mucho más surrealista, algo que honestamente convive muy bien con los abundantes elementos de comedia que se introducen desde el principio.

Beau es un hombre adulto que vive en un estado de paranoia perpetuo, y muchas veces, se le da a entender al espectador que dicho miedo está muy justificado... Aunque los eventos que se transpiran y la fidelidad de los mismos sea cuestionable. Este miedo ha Sido inculcado por su madre desde el principio, procurando que el mismo nunca se aleje de ella y exista en un estado de inocencia eterna.

Todo cambia cuando descubrimos que Beau tiene un viaje planificado para ir a visitar a su madre, y poco a poco debemos ir viendo cómo va Lidiando con todos los obstáculos que se le cruzan en el camino.

En esencia, podríamos definir "Beau is Afraid" como una odisea moderna, en dónde muchos elementos reconocibles de nuestra realidad se ven exagerados con el propósito de que conectemos con la irracionalidad de su propio protagonista, al mismo tiempo que tenemos acceso a fragmentos muy concretos de su pasado (E incluso futuro) para entender por qué actúa de esa forma.

Y aunque me alegra está idea y siento que está implementada correctamente, también es importante reconocer que Beau is afraid es un filme demasiado volátil y aquellos que noesten dispuestos a conectar con sus temas puede caer directamente en el odio.

Hace unos días reseñaba "Mother!", Un filme de Darren Aronofsky que se construía como una alegoría pero fallaba en encontrar un punto firme entre lo exagerado y la sutileza, por otro lado, la última obra de Ari Aster es un ejemplo perfecto de como seguir la última opción quizá le hubiese colaborado bastante.

Estamos programados a seguir los parametros típicos del formato y es fácil alterarse cuando un cineasta busca salirse del molde, la valentía de Aster para hacer precisamente esto es lo que merece que Beau is Afraid sea apreciado, aunque en el fondo, todos sepamos que no es más que una obra de catarsis en dónde un hombre reflexiona sobre la impotencia que le ha causado su madre.

Es difícil encasillar Beau is Afraid dentro de un género, bien podría ser una comedia negra, una película de aventura, u otro filme de terror, no se lo recomiendo a todo el mundo pero vale la pena darle una oportunidad para bien o para mal.
