Better Call Saul - One more to go

It seems like it was yesterday when Better Call Saul was announced, a curious prequel to one of today's most important contemporary series, news that many of us face with emotion and a little bit of doubt.

Who could blame us? Although it was evident that there was a very talented team behind it (They demonstrated it for years with Breaking Bad), the story of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman was too hermetic to require any kind of expansion, from a narrative point of view it told everything it needed to and while some plot points were left up in the air, this itself was considered a pretty respectable creative decision.

I have explained it on several occasions, Better Call Saul knew how to demonstrate its value, exceeded our expectations and introduced us to a series of new characters and conflicts that in many cases exceeded the quality of the original project.

And here we are, several years later, with 5 seasons done and a 6th one just one episode away. What is the state of everything?

Taking the wise decision to divide its final season into two parts, Better Call Saul has managed to intelligently exploit each and every one of its plot elements, from the beautiful cliffhanger in the seventh episode "Plan and Execution" that was resolved almost immediately after a tortuous wait for the next chapter "Point And Shoot", it seems that we are finding ourselves in a strange prologue where everything follows a predictable but devastating course for the viewer.

I hate the comparisons with Breaking Bad, but it is inevitable to think about the development of the events that Granite State and Felina posed on it after the excellent Ozymandias, the culmination of years of storytelling presented in a great climax where we couldn't do more than witness the inevitable disaster.

With the leisurely pace that characterizes it, Better Call Saul has dedicated each of its most recent episodes to solving a specific sector of its very substantial plot: The breakdown of the relationship between Jimmy and Kim, the imminent death of Lalo Salamanca, and why not: The return of our favorite twisted chemistry teacher and his dopey sidekick.

So what is the task of "Waterworks"? The penultimate chapter of this great work of art exists to dissolve the fragile gap that existed between the 3 eras on which the series was built: The days of Slippin Jimmy, Saul Goodman's association with the central characters of Breaking Bad, and finally: Gene's sad days as the manager of a Cinabbon in Omaha.

As usual, the final bars of Better Call Saul exist drenched in utter irony, giving us a series of events that could be dismissed as predictable or unexpected at the same time, putting us in front of an unstoppable force that will destroy us but is able to keep us hooked enough so we can't stop looking.

One more chapter and off we go.

Pareciera que hubiese Sido ayer cuando se anunció Better Call Saul, una curiosa precuela a una de las series contemporáneas más importantes de la actualidad, una noticia que muchos afrontamos con emoción y un poco de dudas.

¿Quien podría culparnos? A pesar de que era evidente que había un equipo muy talentoso detrás (Lo demostraron durante años con Breaking Bad), la historia de Walter White y Jesse Pinkman era demasiado hermética cómo para requerir cualquier tipo de expansión, desde un punto de vista narrativo se había contado todo lo que necesitaba y aunque algunos puntos de la tramas se dejaron en el aire, esto mismo fue considerado una decisión creativa bastante respetable.

Lo he explicado en varias ocasiones, Better Call Saul supo demostrar su valor, excedió nuestras expectativas y nos presentó una serie de nuevos personajes y conflictos que en muchas ocasiones superaban la calidad del proyecto original.

Y aquí estamos, varios años después, con 5 temporadas listas y una 6ta que está a un solo episodio de terminar. ¿Cuál es el estado de las cosas?

Tomando la sabía decisión de dividir su temporada final en dos partes, Better Call Saul ha sabido explotar de forma inteligente todos y cada uno de sus elementos argumentales, desde el bello cliffhanger en el séptimo episodio "Plan and Execution" que se resolvía de forma casi inmediata luego de una tortuosa espera en el siguiente "Point And Shoot", pareciera que nos estamos encontrando en un extraño prólogo en dónde todo sigue un curso predecible pero devastador para el espectador.

Detesto los paralelismos con Breaking Bad, pero es inevitable pensar en el desarrollo de los eventos que planteaba Granite State y Felina luego de el excelentísimo Ozymandias, la culminación de años de storytelling presentada en un climax estupendo en dónde nos quedaba más que presenciar lo inevitable.

Con el ritmo pausado que le caracteriza, Better Call Saul ha dedicado cada uno de sus más recientes episodios a solucionar un sector específico de su trama tan sustanciosa: El quiebre de la relación entre Jimmy y Kim, la inminente muerte de Lalo Salamanca, y por qué no: El regreso de nuestro retorcido maestro de química favorita.

Entonces, ¿Cuál es la tarea de "Waterworks"? El penúltimo capítulo de esta grandiosa obra de arte existe para disolver la brecha tan frágil que existía entre las 3 eras sobre las cuales se construía la serie: Los días de Slippin Jimmy, la asociación de Saul Goodman con los personajes centrales de Breaking Bad, y finalmente, los tristes días de Gene como el gerente de un Cinabbon en Omaha.

Cómo es de costumbre, los compases finales de Better Call Saul existen empapados en absoluta ironía, brindándonos una serie de hechos que podrían tacharse de predecibles o inesperados al mismo tiempo, poniéndonos frente a una fuerza imparable que nos destruirá pero manteniendonos lo suficientemente enganchados como para no poder dejar de mirar.
