Catch me if you can (2002) review: Spielberg in his prime.

My relationship with the work of Steven Spielberg is quite particular, since although I recognize that he is a master mind when it comes to the seventh art, I have rarely bothered to see his films.

There are exceptions, obviously, I love Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Jaws, and even some slightly more divisive works from his repertoire (Like ready player one).

A couple of weeks ago I watched "The Fabelmans" for the first time, a semi-autobiographical film in which Spielberg would analyze his own love for the medium, the relationship he had with it since he was a child and how many times he used it to shield himself from dysfunctional home in which he grew up, something that inevitably ended up disrupting his art.

I mention this because The Fabelmans, apart from being a love letter to the cinema, allows us to bring a different perspective to everything that this brilliant man created throughout his life, intimate and personal without having to give up the "entertainment" factor.

Catch me if you can is a brilliant example of this, since despite being based on a true story riddled with scams, persecutions and betrayals, at the end of the day it's more about the escapism in which its protagonist plunged to escape the divorce of their parents, than in the crimes committed for years.

Starring Leonard DiCaprio and Tom Hanks (who both do an exceptional job, by the way), Catch Me If You Can tells the story of Frank Abagnale Jr, a young underage boy who spent years posing as an airplane pilot, doctor, and doctor, using forged checks to pay for a life of excessive luxuries. At the same time we see the FBI led by Carl Hanratty trying to catch him.

The result is a film with an impeccable pace, where agility does not obstruct the most emotional moments of its multiple protagonists, and it is easy to advocate for the "good" and "bad" of the story.

Catch me if you can is characterized by being set in the 60s (Mostly), giving the film a nostalgic and bittersweet atmosphere that connects us with an optimistic, brilliant, but at the same time young and innocent time.

Undoubtedly one of Spielberg's best works.

Mi relación con el trabajo de Steven Spielberg es bastante particular, puesto que si bien reconozco que es una mente maestra cuando se trata del séptimo arte, muy pocas veces me he tomado la molestia de ver sus películas.

Hay excepciones, obviamente, adoro Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Jaws, e incluso algunas obras un poco más divisivas de su repertorio (Como ready player one).

Hace un par de semanas vería por primera vez "The Fabelmans", una película en semi autobiográfica en dónde Spielberg analizaría su propio amor por el medio, la relación que tuvo con el desde que era un niño y como muchas veces lo utilizaba para escudarse del hogar disfuncional en el que creció, algo que inevitablemente terminaba trastocando su arte.

Menciono esto porque The Fabelmans, aparte de ser una carta de amor al cine, nos permite brindar una perspectiva diferente a todo lo que este hombre brillante creó a lo largo de su vida, íntimo y personal sin necesidad de renunciar al factor "entretenimiento".

Catch me if you can es un ejemplo brillante de esto, ya que a pesar de estar basado en una historia real plagada de estafas, persecuciones y traiciones, al final del día va más sobre el escapismo en el que su protagonista se sumergió para huir del divorcio de sus padres, que en los crímenes cometidos durante años.

Protagonizada por Leonard DiCaprio y Tom Hanks (que por cierto, ambos hacen un trabajo excepcional), Catch me if you can nos cuenta la historia de Frank Abagnale Jr, un joven menor de edad que pasó años haciéndose pasar por piloto de aviones, doctor y médico, utilizando cheques falsificados para costearse una vida de lujos desmedidos. Al mismo tiempo que vemos al FBI liderado por Carl Hanratty tratando de atraparle.

El resultado es una película con un ritmo impecable, en dónde la agilidad no obstruye los momentos más emotivos de sus múltiples protagonistas, y es fácil abogar por los "buenos" y los "malos" de la historia.

Catch me if you can se caracteriza por estar ambientado en los años 60s (En su mayoría), brindandole al filme una atmósfera nostálgica y agridulce que nos conecta con una época optimista, brillante, pero al mismo tiempo joven e inocente.

Sin duda una de las mejores obras de Spielberg.
