Devilman Crybaby (2018) review: saving and destroying the world, tear by tear.

Although I am not a person who watches anime regularly, there are exceptions to series and movies that I have loved, works like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Death Note, or basically any Ghibli studio film.
It is important that we as viewers understand that anime, like western animation in any of its styles (traditional, 3D, stop motion, etc.), is not a genre but a format... which means, in a few words, that it is a container in which we can build any story.
As a lover of animation in general, it is impossible not to recognize when some creation manages to take advantage of the possibilities of its own format to blow our minds, something that Devilman Crybaby achieves in my humble opinion.
You see, Devilman Crybaby is a 2018 series directed by Masaaki Yuasa and inspired by "Devilman", an iconic manga created by Gō Nagai in the 70s, where we followed the story of Akira Fudo, a rather shy young man who ends up merging with a demon named Amon in order to rid the world of the other "bad" demons.
Devilman Crybaby (considered one of the most faithful and close adaptations to the original manga) takes this same premise and plunges us into an in-depth study of human nature, morality, and the evil that exists in the world, as we see how perceptions that Akira has about demons could be completely wrong.
While Devilman Crybaby may feel disconcerting at first (somewhat fueled by its chaotic, inconsistent, and anatomically incorrect animation style), little by little we come to understand his true intentions, the object of this story beyond the parade of sex, violence, and crime that stands before our eyes.
Calling Devilman Crybaby experimental is an understatement, it plays with confusing narrative elements, airs events quickly without giving much explanation, and has no contemplation to totally destroy any of its characters.
However, this vulgar spectacle ends up serving to reinforce all of its central themes, and, in the end, we are able to see beyond the onscreen hedonism to connect with Akira's unconditional love for humanity.
Considered by many to be the best anime on Netflix, Devilman Crybaby is a perfect example of the possibilities of the medium, with iconic character designs, a spectacular soundtrack, and many moments that will remain etched in the retina of its viewers throughout the entire movie.

Aunque no soy una persona que ve animé con regularidad, existen excepciones de series y películas que me han encantado, obras como Neon Genesis Evangelion, Death Note, o básicamente cualquier filme del estudio Ghibli.
Es importante que nosotros como espectadores comprendamos que el animé, al igual que la animación occidental bajo cualquiera de sus estilos (tradicional, 3D, stop motion, etc), no es un género sino un formato... lo que quiere decir, en pocas palabras, que se trata de un recipiente en el cual podemos construir cualquier historia.
Como un amante de la animación en general es imposible no reconocer cuando alguna creación logra aprovechar las posibilidades de su propio formato para volarnos la cabeza, algo que en mi humilde opinión Devilman Crybaby consigue.
Verán, Devilman Crybaby es una serie del 2018 dirigida por Masaaki Yuasa e inspirada en "Devilman", un icónico manga creado por Gō Nagai en los años 70, en dónde seguíamos la historia de Akira Fudo, un joven bastante tímido que termina fusionándose con un demonio llamado Amon con la finalidad de liberar el mundo de los demás demonios "malos".
Devilman Crybaby (considerada una de las adaptaciones más fieles y cercanas al manga original) toma esta misma premisa y nos sumerge en un estudio profundo a la naturaleza humana, la moral y la maldad que hay en el mundo, a medida que vemos como las percepciones que Akira tiene sobre los demonios podrían estar totalmente equivocadas.
Si bien Devilman Crybaby puede sentirse desconcertante al principio (Algo impulsado por su estilo de animación caótica, inconsistente y anatómicamente incorrecta), poco a poco vamos entendiendo sus verdaderas intenciones, el objeto de esta historia más allá del desfile de sexo, violencia y delincuencia que se posa ante nuestros ojos.
Tachar Devilman Crybaby de experimental es quedarse corto, juega con elementos narrativos confusos, ventila eventos con rapidez sin dar muchas explicaciones y no tiene ningún tipo de contemplación para destruir totalmente a cualquiera de sus personajes.
No obstante, este espectáculo vulgar termina sirviendo para reforzar todos sus temas centrales, y, al final, podemos ver más allá del hedonismo en pantalla para conectar con el amor incondicional que Akira siente por la humanidad.
Considerado por muchos como el mejor animé de Netflix, Devilman Crybaby es un ejemplo perfecto de las posibilidades del medio, con diseños de personajes iconicos, un soundtrack espectacular, y muchos momentos que se van a quedar grabados en la retina de sus espectadores durante toda la vida.
