I have said it on several occasions, in recent years corporate bipoics have become fashionable, a rather curious experiment that is sometimes interesting (Blackberry) and sometimes ks an unforgivable waste of resources and creativity (The beanie bubble).

What is the hook? The idea of seeing a representation on screen of recent or distant historical events, or maybe a showing of the life of a man (Or woman) who did something notable at some point in his life.

Although this way of describing the formula is extremely generic, we must admit that there is an attraction in seeing the way in which each filmmaker decides to approach the events described above, something that works in favor of "Dumb Money", a film starring Paul Dano which premiered a couple of months ago and recounts the entire disaster that surrounded the GameStop stock, after suffering an astronomical rise driven by a Reddit community where hundreds of people won millions of dollars and then lost them.

The curious thing about the whole matter is that these events were relatively recent, in fact, they totally coincided with the most complicated moments of the pandemic, when hundreds of people died day after day as a result of COVID-19 and the world economy was in crisis, almost entirely paralyzed.

I quite appreciate that this tragedy is a crucial part of the narrative, especially since it was something that completely shaped the way entire industries operated internally and (although it may not seem like it) left an immeasurable amount of psychological damage in our minds.

Don't get me wrong, with this I don't mean that Dumb Money is an ode to self-flagellation, quite the opposite, despite it confronts what happened in real life with respect, the framing of each moment is closer to comedy than drama, something that makes us appreciate more the clear influences of frivolous filmmakers from a visual point of view (the elegance of David Fincher comes to mind), and of course, it contrasts with the uninhibited nature of its own story.

Apart from this, Dumb Money is full of brilliant actors and recognizable faces, including Vincent D'Onofrio, Nick Offerman, Seth Rogen, America Ferrera and Pete Davidson (Yes).

Is it the best movie of the year? Of course not, but I found it a good representation of how chaotic life on the internet has become since the beginning of this decade, and while I don't feel like it says anything particularly deep or philosophical, I appreciate that it's all packaged so nicely.

Hmm interesting! I almost got disconnected to what you were trying to send out about the movie but I got it close to the end and I think it's a movie with lessons to learn from.

Of course, I'd be very hard to place a movie as the best of the year so definitely not this one 😅

Yes, it's pretty entertaining tho, I really appreciate that

Seems interesting, I added to the list that I am going to watch.

It's a great "biopic", specially because it doesn't take it self seriously.

avatar

It's all very recent, and I've already seen a documentary they made about it. I'm looking forward to seeing the dramatization, but I don't have high expectations.

Low expectations are the right amount of expectations to have 😁 but that doesnt mean that is not good, I found it pretty enjoyable..
