[ENG/ESP] The Office 5x01: Organic love and why it works.

One of the reasons I love The Office has to do with its ability to show realistic relationships, not because they are intrinsically "real" but because it is always easy to understand why subject "A" is linked to subject "B". The first episode of season 5 "Weight Loss" shows us exactly why.

This chapter focuses on three very different relationships and I would like to look at them briefly, because they all have a different essence.

Jim and Pam: Probably one of the most beloved relationships in the history of television comedies, Jim and Pam build progressively, always organically, they start as friends and things evolve, they are two people with personalities slightly different but with great chemistry. In this particular episode their courtship has been maturing for a while, at the end of the previous season we find Jim's failed attempt to propose, here, after Pam has to temporarily move to New York to study art, in one of his first encounters during his stay there Jim almost desperately decides to propose to him in the middle of a gas station (his meeting point), it is a moment where romanticism does not arise from expressly corny things, but from two characters that we want to see succeed finally giving way to a new level in the relationship.

Michael and Holly: Although at this point in the series they are not officially a couple yet, we all know that it will eventually be like that, Michael and Holly represent in an almost nostalgic and childish way the beginnings of every relationship, both with a chaotic and fun personality they are beginning to connect romantically. Again, this is something the series never forces, it builds on progressively. After a couple of love disappointments and the personality change that Michael Scott has suffered since the first seasons, we understand that it is "worthy of love" and Holly is written perfectly, her chemistry is on another level and it is unthinkable to imagine Michael with someone else never feels like the writers are manipulating us into appreciation, she has flaws just like any other character in the office.

Dwight and Angela / Angela and Andy: The Office has something almost obsessive about the idea of ​​love triangles, but none is as well grounded as Dwight, Angela and Andy. Although it is not the most romantic idea in the world, it is always used by writers to put the characters in very interesting dynamics. We know at this point that Dwight loves Angela, and this probably works in reverse, this helps us understand why Angela is unfaithful to Andy, although we never seek to justify her as a character, it is still a despicable act. Andy on the other hand is a character who lowers himself, almost begging for love, it makes sense from a logical point of view that he wants to have something with Angela, and this relationship also takes time to flourish ... But instead of empathizing with them as a couple, we empathize with Andy and his unfortunate situation.

Later I would like to talk about other chapters of The Office, it is a great series and I feel that there is too much material on it. Although it seems a bit silly at times to think so much about a simple comedy, there is too much value in each episode.

Una de las razones por las que amo The Office tiene que ver con su capacidad para mostrar relaciones realistas, no porque sean intrínsecamente "reales" sino porque siempre es fácil entender por qué el sujeto "A" esta unido al sujeto "B". El primer episodio de la 5 temporada "Weight Loss" nos muestra exactamente por qué.

Este capítulo se enfoca en tres relaciones muy distintas y me gustaría analizarlas brevemente, porque todas tienen una esencia distinta.

Jim y Pam: Probablemente una de las relaciones más queridas de toda la historia de las comedias televisivas, Jim y Pam se construye progresivamente, siempre de forma orgánica, empiezan como amigos y la cosa va evolucionando, son dos personas con personalidades ligeramente distintas pero con una química genial. En este capítulo particularmente ya su noviazgo lleva un tiempo madurando, en el cierre de la temporada anterior nos encontramos con el intento fallido de Jim por proponerse, aquí, luego de que Pam debe mudarse temporalmente a New York para estudiar arte, en uno de sus primeros encuentros durante su estadía allá Jim de forma casi desesperada decide proponersele en medio de una gasolinera (su punto de encuentro), es un momento en donde el romanticismo no surge de cosas expresamente cursi, sino de dos personajes que queremos ver triunfar finalmente dando paso a una nueva etapa.

Michael y Holly: Aunque en este momento de la serie aún no son pareja oficilamente todos sabemos que eventualmente será así, Michael y Holly representan de forma casi nostálgica e infantil los inicios de toda relación, ambos con una personalidad caótica y divertida están empezando a conectar romanticamente. De nuevo, esto es algo que la serie nunca fuerza, lo construye progresivamente. Luego de un par de decepciones amorosas y el cambio de personalidad que ha sufrido Michael Scott desde las primeras temporadas entendemos que es "worthy of love" y Holly esta escrita de forma perfecta, su quimica esta en otro nivel y es impensable imaginar a Michael con alguien más, nunca se siente como que los escritores están manipulandonos para que la apreciemos, ella tiene defectos igual que cualquier otro personaje en la oficina.

Dwight y Angela/Angela y Andy: The Office tiene algo casi obsesivo con la idea de los triangulos amorosos, pero ninguno esta tan bien fundamentado como el de Dwight, Angela y Andy. Aunque no es la idea más romantica del mundo, siempre es aprovechado por los escritores para poner a los personajes en dinámicas muy interesantes. Sabemos en este punto que Dwight ama a Angela, y probablemente esto funcione a la inversa, esto nos ayuda a entender por que Angela es infiel a Andy, aunque nunca buscamos justificarla como personaje, sigue siendo un acto despreciable. Andy por otro lado es un personaje que se rebaja, casi rogando por amor, tiene sentido desde un punto de vista lógico que quiera tener algo con Angela, y esta relación tambien se toma su tiempo para florecer... Pero en vez de empatizar con ellos como pareja, empatizamos con Andy y su lamentable situación.

Más adelante me gustaria hablar sobre otros capítulos de The Office, es una serie genial y siento que hay demasiado material sobre ella. Aunque a veces parezca un poco tonto darle tantas vueltas a una simple comedia, hay demasiado valor en cada episodio.
