ENGLISH

Good Burger is a 1997 film inspired by an iconic All That sketch, and many of you probably know it for representing the first foray into cinemas by the duo of Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson, best known in the 90s as the protagonists of the sitcom "Kenan and Kel."

Although Good Burger was born as an extended version of a Sketch that in theory should not work in such a format, and the quality of the final result was quite mediocre, I admit that its clumsy nature ended up working in its favor, creating an absurdist classic that represents very well the crazy humor of the 90s with all its virtues and defects.

The question is, did Good Burger need a sequel? Not really, not only because it was already difficult to find the perfect balance in which Kel Mitchell's performance did not feel unbearable, but because the cultural context in which it emerged simply no longer exists, and, thank God, we have left back that form of humor as a primary source of entertainment.

However, with this I do not mean that there was no correct angle with which Good Burger 2 could work, especially if they had wanted to mature their characters and take the narrative to another more interesting level, obviously this did not happen.

It has a Few virtues: Good Burger 2 manages to reunite the protagonist duo, has some fun moments and has several references to Kenan and Kel that fans will appreciate.

On this occasion we see how, over the years, Ed ended up becoming the owner of the Good Burger restaurant, leading a perfect life with his wife, his multiple children, and his co-workers.

As expected, Ed has not changed in the slightest, being the same clumsy man with a good heart as always.

Dexter Reed on the other hand just lost his job, so he decides to go to Ed for help.

This simple premise goes through all the narrative beats we honestly expect from it, from seeing Ed with a level of success that makes no sense, to Dexter's desperate attempts to get him to sell Good Burger so that they both become billionaires.

While it is nice to see Kenan and Kel together again, we must take into account that the dynamic between these two is extremely volatile, and the line between pleasant and annoying is crossed on several occasions.

Unfortunately, in the wave of reunions that we are experiencing, Good Burger fails to survive the structural and conceptual problems of other disasters like iCarly or Zoey 102, much more focused on blindly replicating nostalgia without taking the trouble to analyze why these shows and movies worked. first of all.

I love this story line and I would love to watch this movie. Thanks for sharing your review on this

I'm honestly impressed that this,iCarly and Zoey 101 got sequels to be honest. Specially Zoey as I just found that it exists from reading this.

It's kind of weird to think about: These beloved shows at the time had fans that hoped to see a return after they ended...only that by the time they do over a decade or two later, either those fans have changed or the magic, either from the era or from the writers and how the shows worked in their times, also changed and doesn't seem to work as well now. It also tends to be a challenge to reunite the cast knowing how some might not be reachable, retired, or if the sequel is supposed to not have a huge time skip, trying to pass off the clearly aged actors as the youths they were back then.

I've been watching Better Call Saul recently (last watched season 6 episode 3) which somehow pulls off being a prequel very well even in the wake of it's predecessor, but I think that aside from the unmistakable quality of the original show and writers, having the luck of every past actor available AND experienced writers to expand on an already great story is definitely a luxury not all productions can have.

Man...nostalgia is a weird thing, don't you think? I remember watching the Kenan and Kel show but didn't remember watching Good Burger...so I don't have an attachment or reason to watch this, but just to hear that these guys did someone again based off an old thing of theirs is interesting to put it in a way.

Then again, I probably thought the same about the iCarly reboot but didn't really give it much thought at all after the announcement.

Have a great day, and thanks for your review!

Thank you very much for your comment, it is difficult not to agree with everything you just said.

The issue of reboots, prequels and sequels has always conflicted me, because deep down it is always nice to return to those stories and fictional worlds that one loves, but there are more bad examples than good ones in this regard.

Better Call Saul serves very well to explain this, because it is precisely the resumption of an iconic universe, but its story has its own purpose that works in isolation, and it is difficult to question its existence as a whole.

For me, Zoey 101, iCarly and Good Burger (to stay within these examples) had the potential to return, but instead of creating an interesting story that paid homage to the original and could extend it organically, they end up being an insufferable rehash where the defects in the work are becoming more and more noticeable.
