Hunger (2023) review: The Menu + Whiplash + Parasite + Not so good

I don't know if you had the opportunity to hear about "Hunger", a Thai film that premiered on Netflix where we follow the story of a young cook who does her best to be part of one of the most elite teams of chefs in the country. .

And the first thing I want to say is that this is a pretty decent movie, shot efficiently and littered with solid performances (especially its leads played by Chutimon Chuengcharo and Nopachai Jayanama).

My problem with it is that even though it's an amalgamation of inspirations and references to other brilliant work (Whiplash, Parasite, and The Menu are probably the most prominent examples), it's sadly not lacking in the thematic consistency that has elevated everyone. these works to another level.

You see, Hunger is simultaneously about two things: The pursuit of perfection and how the things we eat represent our socioeconomic class. Although it is laudable how both themes come together, from time to time this film stumbles trying to handle them simultaneously.

Chef Paul (Hunger's antagonistic figure) is an omnipotent incentive for Aoy to reach her full potential, a poor and skilled cook who gets carried away by ambition and ends up becoming everything she originally detested.

Paul comes from humble beginnings as well, but due to his childhood traumas he has totally distanced himself from love, turning the kitchen into a weapon that he uses to make the upper class kneel before him, as if he were an agent of karma made person. .

However, Hunger begins to fall apart when it offers us a resolution that has not sold us well throughout its two and a half hours of duration, one that puts its characters in a position that is neither particularly painful nor particularly satisfying, Maybe this was the intention of its director but honestly I expected more.

No sé si ustedes han tenido la oportunidad de escuchar sobre "Hunger" una película thailandesa que se estrenó en Netflix en dónde seguimos la historia de una joven cocinera que hace lo posible por formar parte de uno de los equipos más elitistas de chefs todo el país.

Y lo primero que quiero decir es que está es una película bastante decente, filmada de forma eficiente y plagada de performances sólidos (Especialmente sus protagonistas interpretados por Chutimon Chuengcharo y Nopachai Jayanama).

Mi problema con ella, es que a pesar de que está resulta una amalgama de inspiraciones y referencias a otros trabajos brillantes (Whiplash, Parasite y The Menu Sean probablemente los ejemplos más prominentes), lamentablemente no carece de la consistencia temática que ha elevado a todos estos trabajos a otro nivel.

Verán, Hunger simultáneamente trata de dos cosas: La búsqueda de la perfección y el como las cosas que comemos representan nuestra clase socioeconómica. Aunque es loable como ambos temas se juntan, de vez en cuando este filme trastabillea tratando de manejarlos simultáneamente.

El chef Paul (La figura antagónica de Hunger) es un incentivo omnipotente para que Aoy alcance todo su potencial, una cocinera pobre y habilidosa que se deja llevar por la ambición y termina convirtiéndose en todo lo que originalmente detestaba.

Paul tiene un origen humilde también, pero debido a los traumas de su infancia se ha distanciado totalmente del amor, convirtiendo la cocina en un arma que utiliza para hacer que la clase alta se arrodille ante el, como si fuese un agente del karma hecho persona.

No obstante, Hunger se empieza a desmorona cuando nos ofrece una resolución que no nos ha vendido bien a lo largo de sus dos horas y media de duración, una que pone a sus personajes en una posición que ni es particularmente dolorosa, ni particularmente satisfactoria, quizá está era la intención de su director pero honestamente yo esperaba más.
