These last few days I have been dedicating myself to watching all the Indiana Jones movies in order to prepare for the premiere of Destiny Dial.

As with any franchise of this caliber, trying to maintain an isolated and objective vision is usually an almost impossible task, however, I think the absence of any kind of nostalgia plays in my favor, considering that I neither grew up with these films nor I feel any kind of special attachment to what they represent.

And it is that with each type of review or criticism that I see about it, it seems that the followers of this Steven Spielberg series have very strong opinions about it: Which movies are better, who betray the legacy of the character played by the excellent Harrison Ford, and what would be the best way to proceed with a hypothetical sequel.

In this sea of opinions, one of the most recurring has to do with "The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull" being considered the worst in the saga, an unforgivable sin towards the original trilogy.

You see, although raiders of the lost ark, the temple of doom and the last crusade were released in the 80s, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out in 2007, a complicated time jump that obviously had to be accepted by the work, a difficult task to accomplish.

However, I must admit that in my humble opinion the fourth installment of Indiana Jones is not only a worthy continuation of what we saw in the original trilogy, but also does many unexpected things with the myth of the character that perhaps many of his fans are ignoring.

If the original three adventures of Dr. Jones were basically interchangeable chapters with a slightly ambiguous timeline, Crystal Skull comes off as a much more direct sequel, capable of reintroducing old characters organically and making them share the screen with several nice additions.

Logically, I understand that those most passionate fans could feel bitterness under the idea of a bastard son of the beloved archaeologist, or a failed marriage attempt with Marion (the love interest of the first film), in more objective terms they could be considered narrative challenges that allow us to see a new side of those characters we already knew.

And while there's definitely a different flavor to the execution of all of this, it's undeniably still a concise film, with some good action interspersed with other dramatic moments.

Hand on heart I can't say the quality remains the same, but I'm also not bothered by the idea of completing Jones' story with this film, however, at the same time it makes me feel excited about the narrative possibilities of Destiny Dial. , although again to leave the public quite polarized.

I love the first three movies. While I always wanted to see another Indiana Jones adventure, the fourth installment didn't live up to my expectations. It was entertaining, I liked it, but I felt it lacked some of the epicness of the previous ones.

I agree, although I was really surprised with how decent it was, maybe my low expectations helped

Have to wholeheartedly agree here. 4th film wasn't great on quality, but it did feel like a very final completion to the saga. Neatly wraps up several loose ends for viewers. I think this is partially what is so polarizing. It was over. It ended. A neat little bow was on it. Why dig things back up? Why undo the continuity? I'm not going to take sides here. Just saying I understand and I agree with the feeling here. I look forward to your review of the newest installment. I especially look forward to it because of your unique perspective. Let me get my popcorn.

Thanks for your comment! To me this franchise has been a really "peculiar" trip and sometimes I simply don't know how to feel about it. 😅

To me something like the last crusade is miles above, of course, but I find the risky nature of Crystal Skull really appealing

Let's see how it goes with the fifth one

avatar

I liked the Last Crusade a lot too. Sean Connery did not disappoint.

avatar

Temple of Doom is actually probably my least favorite Indiana Jones movie. However, I though both Raiders and Last Crusade were much better than Crystal Skull.

avatar

Temple Doom is probably the weakest of that trilogy, although I really enjoyed the tone and the side characters, it also got a really nice rhythm in my opinion 😅

avatar

I really liked the first half of the movie. It just went downhill somewhere after the tunnel of bugs...

avatar

Yeah I've never found it to be as bad as people implied. It's not the best, but it wasn't vastly different. As far as those early passing of the torch films go, it didn't do much wrong.

avatar

Exactly! It's a pretty decent movie with great action moments, Specially the opening sequence...

Of course, not as iconic as the og trilogy, but meh

You're right that not being able to relate to the nostalgic feeling of the last films will make a viewer approach this film more lightly. It is because I cannot relate to the story that I have not even seen this movie yet. Still, I have read a number of reviews saying that this film is just not as good as the last three. Most of the grievances I have noticed are directed towards the "woke" nature of the film considering, as I heard, Indiana Jones being too old and getting effectively outshined by his goddaughter. Other comments were on stuff like capitalism but I don't know for sure. I'll probably see this one to judge.
