Inside (2023) review: is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?

Willem Dafoe is one of the most fascinating actors alive today, from his success with mainstream audiences thanks to his excellent portrayal of the Green Goblin in Spider-Man (2002), to having worked with directors such as Martin Scorsese. , Lars Von Trier or Wes Anderson, make him an iconic figure, always recognizable but also capable of playing transformative roles, capable of be both physically and emotionally demanding.

And with a premise like this one (please do not confuse it with the experimental film by Bo Burnham that we had a couple of years ago with the same name), it is impossible not to be curious, in fact, I would dare to say that its concept, mixed with the presence of Dafoe , are the only point of attraction that Vasilis Katsuopis's film has.

You see, in Inside we follow the story of a skilled art thief who, after having problems with the security system of a luxurious Penthouse in the middle of a robbery, is trapped with no clear way to escape.

However, it is important not to be fooled by this plot, which, almost maliciously, seeks to make us understand that the purpose of Inside is to see how Nemo (Dafoe) manages to get out of this luxurious glass cell.

Instead, we have a much more introspective film, which gloats over the suffering of a man who is increasingly close to madness, and who often seems to find himself in a bitter allegory to purgatory as a point of connection between earth, heaven and hell, instead of a real place.

This dichotomy between the ordinary and the experimental, while it doesn't totally ruin my enjoyment of the film (I admit it was entertaining), I do feel that it takes the focus away a bit, and slows down its true potential.

Nemo's most tangible problems (lack of water, food, entertainment, etc.) are extremely effective in satisfying our morbidity, something that goes very well with Dafoe's spectacular performance, whom we see giving his all in physical and emotional terms. . But from time to time they seem to interfere with the more abstract intentions of the film, distracting us from all the symbolism that has been planted here and now, and keeping the surrealism of this story on a slightly more "dubious" plane.

Without a doubt Inside would benefit from a second viewing, but at least in my case I don't think I have the level of patience that is needed for it.

Y es que una premisa como la de Inside (favor no confundir con el filme experimental de Bo Burnham que tuvimos hace un tiempo), es imposible no sentir curiosidad, de hecho, me atrevería a decir que su concepto, mezclado con la presencia de Dafoe, son el único punto de atracción que tiene la película de Vasilis Katsuopis.

Verán, en Inside seguimos la historia de un habilidoso ladrón de arte quien luego de tener problemas con el sistema de seguridad de un lujoso Penthouse en medio de un atraco, queda atrapado sin ninguna forma clara de escapar.

No obstante, es importante que no se dejen engañar por está trama, la cual, casi maliciosamente, busca darnos a entender que la finalidad de Inside es ver cómo Nemo (Dafoe) se las arregla para salir de esta lujosa celda de cristal.

En cambio, tenemos una película mucho más introspectiva, que se regodea sobre el sufrimiento de un hombre que cada vez se encuentra más cerca de la locura, y que muchas veces parece encontrarse en una amarga alegoría al purgatorio como punto de conexión entre la tierra, el cielo y el infierno, en vez de un lugar real.

Esta dicotomía entre lo ordinario y lo experimental, si bien no llega a arruinar totalmente mi disfrute de la película (Admito que fue entretenida), si siento que le quita un poco el enfoque, y frena su verdadero potencial.

Los problemas más tangibles de Nemo (La falta de agua, comida, entretenimiento, etc), son extremadamente efectivos para satisfacer nuestro morbo, algo que se lleva muy bien con la espectacular interpretación de Dafoe, a quien vemos dándolo todo en términos físicos y emocionales. Pero de vez en cuando parecen inmiscuirse con las intenciones más abstractas de la película, distrayendonos de todos los simbolismos que se han plantado aquí y ya, y manteniendo el surrealismo de esta historia en un plano un poco más "dudoso".

Sin duda Inside se vería beneficiada de un segundo visionado, pero al menos en mi caso no creo tener el nivel de paciencia que se necesita para ello.
