La La Land (2016) review: What a beautiful experience.

After several years of completely ignoring it and partially motivated by how much I had liked Whiplash, I decided to give it a try for the first time in what is probably the best-known film in Damien Chazelle's entire filmography: La La Land, a musical starring by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone where we follow the story of two emerging artists (A musician and an actress) who fall madly in love at a rare moment in their lives.

You see, beyond the high level of recognition they received at the time (with an Oscar for Best Director included), it's easy to dismiss a film of this type if our tastes don't superficially align with everything that it appears to be, as someone who has never felt a level of affinity for musicals and who found their aesthetics corny and pompous, in the midst of my ignorance I felt there was nothing of value to see here... A serious mistake.

Although La La Land is a romantic movie with all that this implies, at the end of the day it is nothing more than a facade to present us with one of the most humane stories I have had the opportunity to see in a long time, where in between of a selection of musical themes composed by the excellent Justin Hurwitz (who, by the way, also had a hand in the recent Babylon and the previously mentioned Whiplash) plunges us into a world where unfortunately our artistic and professional ambitions must exist to the detriment of personal connections.

The key to its effectiveness lies in the efficient use of every second of the footage, where we follow the first steps in Sebastián and Mía's relationship, the way in which both complement each other and promote their ambitions, and later, the emergence of a series of drawbacks that make it unfeasible.

Was it a matter of timing? Did they want to show us the cost involved in the search for perfection? Should we question the decision of its protagonists? In the end, although it is interesting to stop to analyze each of these questions, the painful reality is that any answer we can give is not going to alter the course of the events we witness, this seems beautiful to me.

If Whiplash ambiguously studied the idea of breaking your soul to achieve our goals, La La Land presents us with a slightly more subtle vision of the same idea, less physically exhausting, but at the same time just as tragic.

The impact that one of them had on the life of the other is permanent, but unfortunately, the world took them on different paths.

La La Land is a beautiful film no matter how you look at it, there is not a single aspect that has not been perfectly executed for the story that was wanted to be told, from details as minute as the costumes of its characters, the way in which they they move in and out of the frames, how they express their opinions by speaking, singing, or with any non-verbal gesture. She's obsessed with nostalgia, but instead of filling us with empty hopes, she decides to accept life as it is, promising us that despite the pain everything will eventually be alright.

Luego de varios años ignorandola por completo y parcialmente motivado por lo mucho que me había gustado Whiplash, decidí darle una oportunidad por primera vez la que probablemente es la película más conocida dentro de toda la filmografía de Damien Chazelle: La La Land, un musical protagonizado por Ryan Gosling y Emma Stone en dónde seguimos la historia de dos artistas emergentes (Un músico y una actriz) que se enamoran locamente en un momento raro de sus vidas.

Verán, más allá del gran nivel de reconocimiento que recibieron en su momento (Con un Oscar a la mejor dirección incluído), es fácil descartar una película de este tipo si nuestros gustos no se alinean superficialmente con todo aquello que la misma aparenta, como alguien que nunca ha sentido un nivel de afinidad por los musicales y que encontraba su estética cursi y pomposa, en medio de mi ignorancia sentía que no había nada de valor para ver aquí... Un grave error.

Si bien La La Land es una película romántica con todo lo que esto implica, al final del día está no es más que una fachada para presentarnos una de las historias más humanas que he tenido la oportunidad de ver en mucho tiempo, en dónde en medio de una selección de temas musicales compuestos por el excelente Justin Hurwitz (Quien por cierto, también metió la mano en la reciente Babylon y la previamente mencionados Whiplash) se nos sumerge en un mundo en dónde lastimosamente nuestras ambiciones artísticas y profesionales deben existir en detrimento de las conexiones personales.

La clave de su efectividad radica en el uso eficiente de cada segundo del metraje, en dónde seguimos los primeros pasos de la relación de Sebastián y Mía, la forma en la que ambos se complementan e impulsan sus ambiciones, y posteriormente, el surgimiento de una serie de inconvenientes que hacen que la misma sea inviable.

¿Era una cuestión de timing? ¿Se nos quería mostrar el costo que implica la búsqueda de la perfección? ¿Debemos cuestionar la decisión de sus protagonistas? Al final, si bien es interesante detenerse a analizar cada una de estas interrogantes, la dolorosa realidad es que cualquier respuesta que podamos dar no va a alterar el curso de los eventos que presenciamos, esto me parece hermoso.

Si Whiplash estudiaba con ambigüedad la idea de quebrarse el alma para conseguir nuestros objetivos, La La Land nos presenta una visión un poco más sutil de la misma idea, menos físicamente desgastante, pero a la vez igual de tragica.

El impacto que uno de ellos tuvo en la vida del otro es permanente, pero lastimosamente, el mundo los fue llevando por caminos distintos.

La La Land es una película hermosa por dónde se le mire, no existe un único aspecto que no haya sido ejecutado a la perfección para la historia que se quería contar, desde detalles tan diminutos como el vestuario de sus personajes la forma en la que se mueven dentro y fuera de los encuadres, el como expresan sus opiniones hablando, cantando, o con cualquier gesto no verbal. Está obsesionada con la nostalgia, pero en vez de llenarnos de esperanzas vacías, decide aceptar la vida como es, y nos promete que a pesar del dolor eventualmente todo estará bien.
