Nada (2023) review: the raging foodie.

I feel fascinated by "Nada", an Argentine series exclusive to Star+ that beyond the intermittent presence of Robert DeNiro (Si) did not seem to offer much, however, after feeling trapped by the cynical and intentionally uncomfortable nature of its first chapter, I had the need to see it in its entirety in just a couple of days.

It makes sense, I have always gravitated towards series and films that use food as a central narrative resource: The Bear is one of my favorite series of the year and I don't think there is a film in the world that I have more affection for than "Chef" by Jon Favreau, not only because I feel a fascination with the world of gastronomy at all its levels, but because I perceive it as a brilliant tool to explore different facets of human nature.

Created by Mariano Cohn and starring Luis Brandoni, in "Nada" we follow the story of a rather elderly food critic whose domestic worker has just died, for this reason he is forced to perform a lot of simple tasks that, considering his decades of dependence on this woman, becomes more complicated than expected.

The point is that Manuel is far from being a "normal" man, he is characterized by being extremely cynical, pedantic, and having a standard that is quite difficult to please in basically any facet of his life. He is intelligent, obviously, but he is also too disconnected. of his own humanity.

All this changes when he is forced to hire Antonia, a young Paraguayan woman who represents everything he detests, but who at the same time will show him a side of life that he used to ignore.

"nada" is an extremely simple series that in just 5 chapters takes us through a series of events that at first might seem superfluous, but in the end we understand that they are nothing more than a series of challenges that force Manuel to reinterpret the silly modern world under a much friendlier perspective.

Each chapter has a fairly fast pace, and DeNiro's presence is initially justified as that of an omnipresent narrator, which not only serves to give agility to the story, but also acts as a bridge between the viewer and very specific elements of the story. Argentine culture that are being shown, making the setting of "Nada" also make a lot of sense.

This series has it all: it is elegant, it is fun, and it knows how to be critical of two radically different sectors of society, airing the virtues and defects that we young people and the "old" have face to face. All, of course, using gastronomy as a driving force.

Me siento fascinado con "Nada", una serie argentina exclusiva de Star+ que más allá de la presencia intermitente de Robert DeNiro (Si) no parecía ofrecer demasiado, no obstante, luego de sentirme atrapado ante la naturaleza tan cínica e intencionalmente incomoda de su primer capítulo, tuve la necesidad de verla completa en tan solo un par de días.

Tiene sentido, desde siempre he gravitado ante las series y las películas que usan la comida como un recurso narrativo central: The Bear es una de mis series favoritas del año y no creo que exista un filme en el mundo al que le tenga más cariño que "Chef" de Jon Favreau, no solo porque siento una fascinación por el mundo de la gastronomía en todos sus niveles, sino porque la percibo como una herramienta brillante para explorar distintas facetas de la naturaleza humana.

Creada por Mariano Cohn y protagonizada por Luis Brandoni, en "Nada" seguimos la historia de un crítico de comida bastante mayor cuya empleada doméstica acaba de fallecer, por esta razón se ve forzado a realizar un montón de tareas sencillas que, considerando sus décadas de dependencia de esta mujer, se le complican más de lo esperado.

La cuestión es que Manuel dista de ser un hombre "normal", se caracteriza por ser extremadamente cínico, pedante, y tener un estandard bastante difícil de complacer en básicamente cualquier faceta de su vida, es inteligente, obviamente, pero también se encuentra demasiado desconectado de su propia humanidad.

Todo esto cambia cuando se ve forzado a contratar a Antonia, una joven paraguaya que representa todo lo que el detesta, pero que al mismo tiempo le va a mostrar una faceta de la vida que solía ignorar.

"Nada" es una serie extremadamente sencilla que en tan solo 5 capitulos nos lleva a través de una serie de eventos que en un principio podrían parecer superfluos, pero que al final comprendemos que no suponen más que una serie de desafíos que fuerzan a Manuel a reinterpretar el tonto mundo moderno bajo una óptica mucho más amable.

Cada capítulo tiene un ritmo bastante acelerado, y la presencia de DeNiro se justifica inicialmente como la de un narrador omnipresente, lo cual no solo sirve para darle agilidad a la historia, sino que también hace de puente entre el espectador y elementos muy específicos de la cultura argentina que se están mostrando, haciendo que el setting de "Nada" también tenga mucho sentido.

Esta serie lo tiene todo: es elegante, es divertida, y sabe ser crítica con dos sectores de la sociedad radicalmente diferentes, ventilado las virtudes y los defectos que tenemos los jóvenes y los "viejos" frente a frente. Todo, por supuesto, utilizando la gastronomía como motor.
