On the Rocks (2020) review: A solid journey to nowhere.

Sometimes I spend too much time thinking about how inconsistent those of us who review movies tend to be, why? Because no matter how hard we try, it is almost impossible to maintain a hermetic vision, which is not blinded by the love or hatred we feel towards certain filmmakers, genres and concepts.

I mention this because although "On the Rocks" is a dramatic comedy that is well above average, a little reading of a couple of reviews on sites like Letterbox, Filmaffinity or YouTube will allow us to glimpse that it is usually detested by a good portion of its viewers.

The reason? Sofia Coppola in the role of director/writer, something that could put people's expectations in the sky.

You see, On the Rocks is a movie that starts from a simple premise and rarely seeks to do anything risky with it: we follow a woman and her womanizing father as they try to unravel whether or not her husband is being unfaithful.

The heart of On the Rocks then lies in the strong dialogue delivered by the characters of Laura and Felix (played by Rashida Jones and Bill Murray respectively) who take an in-depth look at the dynamics of men and women in the modern world as Laura reflects on and tries to wrestle with the traumas that her own father left her.

While I appreciate this, I'm sorry that nothing particularly interesting is done with this idea, leaving it as an empty manipulation of our expectations when we end up finding out that the man wasn't actually being unfaithful.

Does this mean it's a bad movie? Of course not, On the Rocks is consistently entertaining and although I've seen better performances from Bill Murray it gives us a couple of brilliant moments.

In essence, it is a satire on the paranoia characteristic of a relationship that is in a critical state, personified in a father who "confirms" all the worst stigmas that surround the modern man. It is not the most brilliant film in the world but it does not pretend to be.

A veces gasto demasiado tiempo pensando en lo inconsistente que solemos ser aquellos que nos dedicamos a reseñar peliculas, ¿Por que? Porque por más que lo intentemos es casi imposible mantener una vision hermética, que no se encuentre cegada por el amor u odio que sentimos ante ciertos cineastas, generos y conceptos.

Menciono esto porque si bien "On the Rocks" es una comedia dramatica que se encuentra muy por encima de la media, un pequeño repaso a un par de reseñas en sitios como Letterbox, Filmaffinity o YouTube nos van a dejar entrever que suele ser detestada por una buena porción de sus espectadores.

¿La razón? Sofia Coppola en el rol de director/escritora, algo que podria poner las expectativas el cielo.

Verán, On the Rocks es una pelicula que parte de una premisa simple y rara vez busca hacer algo arriesgado con ella: seguimos a una mujer y su padre mujeriego a medida que tratan de desentrañar si el esposo de ella está siendo infiel o no.

El corazon de On the Rocks entonces se encuentra en los solidos dialogos emitidos por los personajes de Laura y Felix (Interpretados por Rashida Jones y Bill Murray respectivamente) quienes analizan profundamente las dinamicas de los hombres y las mujeres en el mundo moderno a medida que Laura reflexiona e intenta luchar con los traumas que su propio padre le dejó

Si bien aprecio esto, lamento que no se haga nada particularmente interesante con esta idea, quedando como una vacía manipulación a nuestras expectativas cuando terminamos descubriendo que el hombre en realidad no estaba siendo infiel.

¿Esto quiere decir que es una mala película? Por supuesto que no, On the rocks se mantiene entretenida de forma consistentr y aunque he visto mejores performances de Bill Murray nos brinda un par de momentazos brillantes.

En esencia, se trata de una sátira a la paranoía caracteristica de una relacion que se encuentra en estado crítico, personificada en un padre que "confirma" todos los peores estigmas que rodean al hombre moderno. No es la película mas brillante del mundo pero tanpoco pretende serlo.
