Palm Springs (2020) review: What a day.

One of the reasons why I totally fell in love with Palm Springs ever since I had the opportunity to see it for the first time a couple of years ago, was because for me it is one of those films that works perfectly to overcome the stigma of what we usually associate with "comedy", when someone tries to bring the genre to the table with a bit of seriousness.

Starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, Palm Springs was about a rather refreshing mix of humor with elements of romance and sci-fi, using a premise that I honestly feel is best to be totally unaware of before seeing the movie.

It's quite simple: Nyles for some reason has been stuck in a time loop, which means that for an indefinite amount of time he has to relive the wedding of one of his girlfriend's best friends, a girl he's dating, over and over again. finds quite dissatisfied.

The point is that after reliving the same events over and over again, Nyles has begun to lose interest in his own existence and that of those around him, trying to spend his days in the most relaxed way possible, and making disasters from time to time. from time to time to kill boredom.

All of this changes when Sarah ends up getting caught up in the same general loop, forcing Nyles to put all the things he's been through into perspective, trying to understand what happened and looking for a way to solve that time paradox... Although in the meantime, they're going to take advantage of the situation to live extreme things that endanger their lives, considering the lack of consequences that they will have in this regard.

Like other classics like Groundhog Day, Palm Springs takes a fun and whimsical premise and uses it to deliver deeply philosophical messages without ever sacrificing its funny nature, resetting the tropes we tend to associate with rom-coms and making that everything works in a slightly more "chaotic" scenario.

None of this would be possible without the undeniable chemistry of its protagonists, who in just 1 hour and a half manage to fully immerse us in their psyches: it is easy to connect with their feelings at all times and they are very well supported by a very solid cast of secondary characters.

Without feeling rushed, Palm Springs is a nimble film, making good use of time and managing to provide us with a satisfying conclusion to an ironically monotonous conflict, nothing particularly unique about it in terms of direction or photography, but to be honest it doesn't need it.

Una de las razones por las que me enamoré totalmente de Palm Springs desde que tuve la oportunidad de verla por primera vez hace un par de años, fue porque para mí es una de esas películas que sirven a la perfección para superar el estigma de aquello que solemos asociar con "comedia", cuando alguien trata de traer el género a la mesa con un poco de seriedad.

Protagonizada por Andy Samberg y Cristin Milioti, Palm Springs se trataba de una mezcla bastante refrescante de humor con elementos de romance y ciencia ficción, utilizando una premisa que honestamente, siento que es mejor desconocer totalmente antes de ver la película.

Es bastante simple: Nyles por alguna razón se ha quedado atrapado en un bucle temporal, lo cual quiere decir que durante un tiempo indefinido debe revivir una y otra vez la boda de una de las mejores amigas de su novia, una chica con la que se encuentra bastante disconforme.

La cuestión es que luego de revivir los mismos eventos una y otra vez, Nyles ha empezado a perder el interés por su propia existencia y aquella de quienes lo rodean, tratando de pasar sus días de la forma más relajada posible, y haciendo desastres de vez en cuando para matar el aburrimiento.

Todo esto cambia cuando Sarah termina viéndose envuelta en el mismo bucle general, forzando a Nyles a poner en perspectiva todas las cosas que ha vivido, tratando de comprender que sucedió y buscando una forma de resolver esa paradoja temporal... Aunque mientras tanto, van a aprovechar la situación para vivir cosas extremas que pongan en peligro sus vidas, considerando la falta de consecuencias que tendrán al respecto.

Al igual que otros clásicos como Groundhog Day, Palm Springs toma una premisa divertida y fantasiosa y la utiliza para emitir mensajes con mucha profundidad filosófica sin necesidad de dejar a un lado su naturaleza divertida, reajustando los tropos que solemos asociar con las comedias románticas y haciendo que todo funcione en un escenario un poco más "caótico".

Nada de esto sería posible sin la innegable química de sus protagonistas, quienes en tan solo 1 hora y media nos logran sumergir totalmente en sus psiques: es fácil conectar con sus sentimientos en todo momento y se ven muy bien apoyados por un cast de personajes secundarios muy sólido.

Sin llegar a sentirse apresurada, Palm Springs es una película ágil, que aprovecha bien el tiempo y logra brindarnos una conclusión satisfactoria a un conflicto irónicamente monótono, no tiene nada particularmente único en términos de dirección o fotografía, pero siendo honesto no lo necesita.
