Although it is impossible to avoid comparisons with the bizarre "Elvis" that Baz Luhrmann gave us in 2022, the truth is that Priscilla manages to establish itself as a totally different film, with aesthetic and substantial differences that go far beyond the contrasting nature of their film performances by Austin Butler and Jacob Elordi, both in charge of giving life to the iconic (And complex) king of Rock and Roll.

Luhrman, in tone with his own style, showed us a roller coaster of almost 3 hours, where each costume, each piece of dialogue, each set design and each cut operated in a kind of harmonious chaos, creating an exhausting experience that ironically fit very well good the public perception that people had of this man, although for obvious reasons he decided to just briefly address the most controversial aspects of his life.

Although Sofia Coppola did not intend to create a response to these imperfections in the form of a feature film with "Priscilla" (And to a certain extent I feel that seeing it like this detracts from her creative vision), it is still funny that both films follow diametrically opposite philosophies despite the fact that they have the same real people as a starting point.

Yes, as its name indicates, Priscilla tells the story of Elvis's wife, played by a wonderful Cailee Speany.

However, far from being a typical biopic, instead we have an exploration of a quite particular relationship where, apart from an alarming age gap, there was a power dynamic that gave rise to multiple physical and emotional abuse for years.

In this way, Priscilla exists in a fascinating limbo, where it must have the ability to portray Presley's undeniable charisma and the reason why so many women felt the need to gravitate towards him, but it must also be able to see behind the facade that was carefully built by one of the most iconic artists of all time, as well as the people around him.

And while we have the opportunity to follow many crucial moments of the Presley family, it is fascinating that this is used as an excuse to demonstrate instead the creepy nature of predatory relationship.

This is where Coppola's brilliant direction comes into play, mixed with the excellent performance of Speany and Elordi, capable of transmitting thousands of emotions with just a couple of glances and maintaining an elegant subtlety that respects the viewer's criteria.

"Priscilla", besides, is a film that knows its own scale very well, and knows how to perfectly portray the life of excess led by the king of rock and roll, something that we can see in the luxurious vehicles of the time, the mansions and hotel rooms in which he stayed, as well as in all the changing rooms that parade before our eyes.

Minimalist, elegant and imposing, a brilliant way to tell a simple but devastating story.

Aunque es imposible evitar las comparaciones con la estrambótica "Elvis" que Baz Luhrmann nos entregó en 2022, la verdad es que Priscilla logra erigirse como un filme totalmente distinto, con diferencias estéticas y sustanciales que van mucho más allá de la naturaleza tan contrastante de los performances de Austin Butler y Jacob Elordi, ambos encargados de darle vida al icónico (Y complejo) rey del Rock and Roll.

Luhrman, muy bien a su estilo, nos mostraba una montaña rusa de casi 3 horas, en dónde cada vestuario, cada pieza de diálogo, cada escenografía y cada corte operaba en una suerte de caos armónico, creando una experiencia desgastante pero que irónicamente encajaba muy bien con la percepción pública que teníamos de este hombre, aunque por razones obvias decidiera abordar con mucha fugacidad los aspectos más controversiales de su vida.

Aunque Sofia Coppola no pretendía crear una respuesta a estas imperfecciones en forma de largometraje con "Priscilla" (Y hasta cierto punto siento que verla así le quita mérito a su visión creativa), no deja de ser gracioso ambos filmes sigan filosofias diametralmente opuestas a pesar de que tienen a las mismas personas reales como punto de partida.

Si, como su nombre lo indica Priscilla cuenta la historia de la esposa de Elvis, interpretada por una estupenda Cailee Speany.

No obstante, lejos de ser una típica biopic, en cambio tenemos una exploración a una relación bastante particular en dónde aparte de una brecha de edades alarmantes, habia una dinámica de poder que dió pie a múltiples abusos físicos y emocionales durante años.

De esta forma, Priscilla existe en un limbo fascinante, en dónde debe tener la capacidad de retratar el innegable carisma de Presley y la razón por las cuales tantas mujeres sentían la necesidad de gravitar hacia el, pero también debe ser capaz de ver detrás de la fachada que cuidadosamente construyó uno de los artistas más iconicos de todo lo tiempos, así como la gente le rodeaba.

Y es que si bien tenemos la oportunidad de seguir muchos momentos cruciales de las familia Presley, es fascinante que esto sea utilizado como excusa para demostrar una relación depredadora.

Aquí es donde entra en juego la brillante dirección de Coppola, mezclada con el excelente performance de Speany y Elordi, capaces de transmitir Miles de emociones con solo un par de miradas y manteniendo una sutileza elegante que respeta el criterio del espectador.

"Priscilla", aparte, es un filme que conoce muy bien su propia escala, y sabe retratar a la perfección la vida de excesos llevada por el rey de rock and roll, algo que podemos ver en los lujosos vehículos de la época, las mansiones y habitaciones de hotel en las que se quedaba, así como en todos los vestuarios que van desfilando ante nuestros ojos.

Minimalista, elegante e imponente, una forma brillante de contar una historia simple pero devastadora.

Thanks! I appreciate booth projects in their own regards, but Priscilla for me was on a another level!
