Punisher (2004) review: it's awful, but it works.

A couple of months ago I read a pretty good review from @netflixr where he talked about Punisher, a film inspired by the renowned Marvel character that was released in 2004 and that from the beginning has been viewed negatively by specialized critics and the general public in almost equal quantities.

The curious thing about the whole thing is that although I have always been aware of the film problems, I had a nostalgic connection with it that made me focus only on the positive, and ironically, revisiting her only entrenched me more in this nostalgia.

I have said it on several occasions, the panorama of current superhero cinema is quite bitter, not so much because objective errors are made, but because a soulless comfort zone has been reached from which they leave very rarely, gone are the days in which Marvel and DC took risks and experimented with new ideas, everything increasingly feels more derivative and repetitive.

They can say anything about the superhero movies of the early 2000s, but what we cannot deny is that each attempt at adaptation was a totally different and refreshing foray into a terrain that was relatively unknown at the time.

Daredevil, Catwoman, Hulk, were fascinating experiments with a unique aesthetic identity, which, in the midst of shame, timidly adapted the comics that conceived their respective characters.

Punisher for me (with all its imperfections) fits into this category, although it lacks the moral density that other later adaptations of the same character (Especially the Netflix series) gave it.

Directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, in it we follow the story of Frank Castle, a man who used to work as an undercover agent, and who ends up losing his entire family as a result of the revenge of Howard Saint, a white-collar criminal who orders his murder after the death of his son.

In this way, The Punisher Movie focuses on Castle's efforts to return revenge on Saint, ending his criminal empire and killing his best friend, his wife, and his other son.

It is important that watching a movie like this one we understand that at no time is there going to be any kind of effort to give density to the personality of Castle or all the other good and bad characters that surround him, his plot feels like the premise of a nineties videogame and limits itself to being a story full of bloodlust and quite exaggerated moments of action, it never wants us to question the actions of its protagonist and focuses on being fun.

The question is: they achieved this? It depends on who you ask, in my opinion the answer is a resounding yes, but I perfectly understand the contempt accumulated over the years, there is nothing particularly interesting about it, its characters are forgettable and aesthetically it is nothing Of the other world.

Hace un par de meses leí un Review bastante bueno de @netflixr en dónde hablaba de Punisher, una película inspirada en el reconocido personaje de Marvel que fue estrenada en 2004 y que desde el principio ha sido vista con malos ojos por parte de la crítica especializada y el público general en cantidades casi iguales.

Lo curioso de todo el asunto es que aunque siempre he estado consciente de sus problemas, tenía una conexión nostálgica con ella que me que me hacía enfocarme únicamente en lo positivo, e irónicamente, revisitarla no hizo más que atrincherarme en esta nostalgia.

Lo he dicho en varias ocasiones, el panorama del cine de superhéroes actual es bastante amargo, no tanto porque se cometan errores objetivos, sino porque se ha alcanzado una zona de confort desalmada de la que se sale muy pocas veces, atrás quedaron los días en dónde Marvel y DC se arriesgaban y experimentaban con ideas nuevas, todo cada vez se siente más derivativo y repetitivo.

Pueden decir lo que se de las películas de superhéroes de principios del 2000, pero lo que no podemos negar es que cada intento de adaptación era incursión totalmente distinta y refrescante a un terreno que en ese entonces resultaba desconocido.

Daredevil, Catwoman, Hulk, eran experimentos fascinantes con una identidad estética única, que, en medio de la vergüenza adaptaban tímidamente las historietas que lo concibieron.

Punisher para mí (con todas sus imperfecciones) encaja en esta categoría, aunque carezca de la densidad moral que otras adaptaciones posteriores (Especialmente la serie de Netflix) le brindaron.

Dirigida por Jonathan Hensleigh, en ella seguimos la historia de Frank Castle, un hombre que solía trabajar como agente encubierto, y que termina perdiendo a toda su familia producto de la venganza de Howard Saint, un criminal de cuello blanco que termina ordenando su asesinato tras la muerte de su hijo.

De esta forma, La película de Punisher se enfoca en los esfuerzos que realiza Castle para regresarle la venganza a Saint, acabando con su imperio criminal, su mejor amigo, su esposa y su otro hijo.

Es importante que al ver una película como está comprendamos que en ningún momento va a haber ningún tipo de esfuerzo para darle densidad a la personalidad de Castle o de todos los demás personajes buenos y malos que le rodean, como si se tratara de la premisa de un videojuego noventero Punisher se limita a ser una historia plagada de sed de sangre y momentos de acción bastante exagerados, nunca pretende que cuestionemos las acciones de su protagonista y se enfoca en ser divertida.

La pregunta es: ¿Consigue lograr esto? Depende de a quien se lo preguntes, en mi caso la respuesta es un rotundo si, pero entiendo a la perfección el desprecio acumulado a lo largo de los años, no hay nada particularmente interesante en ella, sus personajes son olvidables y estéticamente no es nada del otro mundo.
