Isn't the greatest film ever but I love how they turned Superman into an actually compelling character.

Exactly! That's a good point I even forgot to mention in my post. With this movie Superman is now more of a character you can feel pity, fear, etc for rather than a guy you think would always be fine and always have things under control. He's now more human and relatable.
