South Park - Joining the Panderverse (2023) review: This was a downgrade.

I have reviewed here most of the South Park specials that have been released on Paramount Plus, experiments by Matt and Trey Parker that over time have demonstrated the ability of the irreverent series to work in a longer format (40-50 minutes), however, I admit that despite appreciating them all, the formula is starting to feel a little worn out.

Post-Covid, the special that started it all, was a relentless example of how the typical South Park humor could be mixed with more introspective moments than usual, developing complex ideas that a single episode might not have been able to convey. while employing a hilarious critique of the general (and well-founded) panic we all felt when COVID began to affect everyone.

Streaming Wars (The Next Special) didn't feel as forceful, but it still managed to develop its characters very well (Especially Randy Marsh) and had a satisfying closure.

Now it is the turn of Panderverse, a special that, very much in the style of South Park, seeks to simultaneously criticize the desperate search for inclusion and political correctness, as well as those who believe that there is a conspiracy to establish a new world order using said inclusion.

And although this review is quite effective in its execution, unfortunately I must say that there is not enough meat to feel satisfied, especially since the time spent with the protagonists of the two main plots (Cartman and Randy) falls short compared to a sequence of repetitive gags that honestly became clear the first time they were said.

Unlike the previous specials, Panderverse could function as a "normal" episode, and trying to remain neutral to all the topics it decides to address, it rather ends up feeling bland and inconsequential.

I highlight the subtext of Randy's drama (demonstrating how our dependence on technology and artificial intelligence has made us useless when it comes to performing mundane tasks) as well as the intermittent display of the alternate universe where all the inhabitants from South Park are women belonging to racial minorities, something interesting at least for the possibilities it represents in terms of alternate designs for recognizable characters.

Post-covid, el especial que le dió inicio a todo, era una muestra implacable de como se podía mezclar el humor típico de South Park con momentos más introspectivos de lo usual, desarollando ideas complejas que un solo episodio hubiese quizá no hubiese podido transmitir, empleando al mismo tiempo una crítica hilarante al pánico general (y bien fundado) que todos sentimos cuando el COVID empezó a afectar a todo el mundo.

Streaming Wars (El siguiente especial) no se sentía tan contundente, pero aún así lograba desarrollar muy bien a sus personajes (Especialmente Randy Marsh) y tenía un cierre satisfactoria.

Ahora es el turno de Panderverse, un especial que muy al estilo de South Park busca criticar simultáneamente la búsqueda desesperada de inclusión y corrección política, así como a aquellos que creen que existe una conspiración para instaurar un nuevo orden mundial utilizando dicha inclusión.

Y aunque está crítica es bastante efectiva en su ejecución, lastimosamente debo decir que no hay suficiente carne como para sentirnos satisfechos, especialmente porque el tiempo pasado con los protagonistas de las dos tramas principales (Cartman y Randy) se queda corto frente a una secuencia de gags repetitivos que honestamente quedaron claros la primera vez que se dijeron.

A diferencia de los especiales previos, Panderverse podría funcionar como un episodio "normal", y tratando de mantenerse neutro ante todos los temas que decide abordar, más bien termina sintiéndose blando e inconsecuente.

Destaco el subtexto de la drama de Randy (Demostrando la forma en la que nuestra la dependencia de la tecnología y la inteligencia artificial nos ha hecho inútiles cuando se trata de realizar tareas mundanas) así como la muestra intermitente del universo alterno en dónde todos los habitantes de South Park son mujeres pertenecientes a minorías raciales, algo interesante al menos por las posibilidades que representa en términos de diseños alternos para personajes reconocibles.
