Strange way of life (2023) review: the honest western.

I must clarify that, for those who know "A Strange Way of Life", whatever you are expecting about it: it is not going to be like that... And this is something that I do not necessarily mean as an insult, since hateful comparisons with Brokeback Mountain they could lead us to expect a romantic drama where we see how the relationship between two men organically goes from tension and aggressiveness to love.

Instead, we get a bittersweet exploration into the psyche of two broken men, where what originally appears to be a friendly reunion ends up being the smokescreen for something a little murkier.

Its half-hour duration is a double-edged sword, because on the one hand it feels insufficient to completely immerse us in the relationship of these two men, but in exchange it is compensated by the brilliant performances of Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke, who portray the characters of Silva and Jake perfectly.

While I don't see this project working in a longer format (Yes, I admit I'm contradicting myself), A Strange Way of Life remains a curious short film, one that leaves aside the shock factor and comfortably embraces the sexually inclusive reality in that we live, and therefore, it represents a step in the right direction socially speaking.

Pedro Almodóvar is undoubtedly a brilliant filmmaker and Strange Way of Life at least serves as a great starting point for his filmography. Technically it is very neat and even if we fail to connect with its particular premise we will feel trapped with the way everything looks, especially because despite the implicit homoeroticism in almost all westerns, it very rarely takes such a central role.

Debo aclararles que, para aquellos que conozcan "A Strange Way of life", lo que sea que estén esperando al respecto: no va a ser así... Y esto es algo que no digo necesariamente como un insulto, puesto que las comparaciones odiosas con Brokeback Mountain podrían llevarnos a esperar un drama romántico en dónde vemos como la relación entre dos hombres va pasando orgánicamente de la tensión y la agresividad a el amor.

En cambio, tenemos una exploración agridulce a la psique de dos hombres quebrados, en dónde lo que originalmente aparenta ser un reencuentro amistoso, termina siendo la cortina de humo para algo un poco más turbio.

Su media hora de duración es un arma de doble filo, porque por un lado se siente insuficiente para sumergirnos por completo en la relación de estos dos hombres, pero a cambio se ve compensado por los brillantes performances de Pedro Pascal y Ethan Hawke, quienes retratan a la perfección los personajes de Silva y Jake.

Si bien no veo este proyecto funcionando en un formato más extenso (Si, admito que me estoy contradiciendo), A Strange Way of Life queda como un cortometraje curioso, que deja de lado el factor shock y abraza con comodidad la realidad inclusiva sexualmente en la que vivimos, y por ello, representa un paso en la dirección correcta socialmente hablando.

Pedro Almodóvar sin duda es un cineasta brillante y Strange Way of Life Al menos sirve como un punto de partida estupendo para su filmografía. Técnicamente es muy prolija e incluso si no logramos conectar con su particular premisa nos sentiremos atrapados con la forma en la que todo luce, especialmente porque a pesar del homoerotismo implícito en casi todos westerns, muy pocas veces este toma un rol tan central.
