Stranger Things - Season 4. Volumen II (2022) review: Are we losing momentum?

After a couple of months (which probably felt like an eternity for more than one) we finally have Volume 2 of the fourth season of Stranger Things, made up of two episodes of considerable length that seek not only to close all the plot arcs that were opened with the first part, but at the same time serve as a transitory bridge to what we will see in the final season that is already confirmed later.

This curious break between the first and second halves of season four, sacrificed the brilliant momentum that had progressively built up its first 7 episodes, allowing all the events witnessed to settle for better or worse.

Volume 2 then begins as an organic of all the defects and virtues that already characterized its predecessor, struggling to balance its multiple characters (New and regular) in the midst of various plots and conflicts that are much more like a large-scale film project. like Infinity War, than a humble horror-adventure series deeply inspired by 70s and 80s pop culture. However, its true strengths emerge when each of its narrative elements begins to fit together, and eventually, this very particular division within the same season makes all the sense in the world.

If I had to highlight the main virtues of these last two episodes, I would have to include first of all their ability to give each character a space for emotional and thematic evolution, where their decisions not only make perfect sense in the world within logic that the series presents us, but they can be devastating for those viewers who expect a slightly more cowardly and conservative conclusion. Stranger Things has been the embodiment of a fascinating and nostalgic concept, which strangely shines brightest when it breaks away from its hackneyed inspirations to deliver something truly unique... and Volume 2 demonstrates all of this more strongly than ever.

It has always been evident that the story is lasting longer than necessary and a good portion of its chapters have suffered as a result (Season Two is a perfect example), this does not mean that it cannot come back, and at least At the moment, even if there are a couple of plot points left over (I'm not the biggest fan of Hopper in Russia, even if it gives us a couple of quite memorable new characters) Stranger Things has taken away from us that it can return to the level of quality that made us fall in love with her first.

There's a great villain who fits well into the story without breaking the coherence of the events we saw in previous seasons, there's a brilliant cast with a couple of actors who deliver unnecessarily long work (Special mention for Sadie Sink) and from a point of technical view is still a beautiful mix of practical visual effects with computerized ones that work great most of the time.

Stranger Things has awakened the escalation of its adventure, the chaos is greater than ever and although the idea is a bit intimidating, I can only wish that when we get to see the final season (which will surely take a long time to arrive), knows how to conclude all those threads so brilliantly formed that it has established since its inception.

For now, I don't have much more to say.

Luego de un par de meses (Que probablemente se sintieron como una eternidad para más de uno) tenemos finalmente el Volúmen 2 de la cuarta temporada de Stranger Things, conformado por dos episodios de considerable duración que buscan no solo cerrar todos los arcos argumentales que se abrieron con la primera parte, sino al mismo tiempo servir como un puente transitorio a lo que veremos en la temporada final que ya se encuentra confirmada más adelante.

Este curioso receso entre la primera y la segunda mitad de la temporada cuatro, sacrificaba el brillante momentum que habían acumulado progresivamente sus primeros 7 episodios, permitiendo que se asentaran todos los eventos presenciandos para bien o para mal.

Volumen 2 inicia como continuación orgánica de todos los defectos y virtudes que ya caracterizaban a su predecesor, luchando por balancear sus múltiples personajes (Nuevos y regulares) en medio de varias tramas y conflictos que se asemejan mucho más a un proyecto cinematográfico de gran escala como Infinity War, que a una humilde serie de terror y aventuras inspirada profundamente en la cultura pop setentera y ochentera. No obstante, sus verdaderas fortalezas surgen cuando cada uno de sus elementos narrativos empiezan a ajustarse, y eventualmente, está división tan particular dentro de la misma temporada cobra todo el sentido del mundo.

Si tuviese que resaltar las principales virtudes de estos dos últimos episodios tendría que incluir en primer lugar su capacidad para darle un espacio de evolución emocional y temática a cada personaje, en dónde sus decisiones no solo tienen todo el sentido del mundo dentro de la lógica que nos presenta la serie, sino que pueden llegar a ser devastadoras para aquellos espectadores que esperen una conclusión un poco más cobarde y conservadora. Stranger Things ha sido la materialización de un concepto fascinante y nostálgico, que, curiosamente, brilla con más fuerza cuando se aleja de sus inspiraciones trilladas para brindar algo realmente único... y el Volúmen 2 demuestra todo esto con más fuerza que nunca.

Desde siempre ha sido evidente que la historia está durando más de lo necesario y una buena porción de sus capítulos han sufrido como consecuencia de ello (La segunda temporada es un ejemplo perfecto), esto no quiere decir que no pueda remontar, y al menos de momento, aunque hayan un par de plot points que sobren (No soy el mayor fan de Hopper en Rusia, aunque nos entregue un par de nuevos personajes bastante memorables) Stranger Things nos ha remostrado que puede retomar el nivel de calidad que nos hizo enamorarnos de ella en primer lugar.

Hay un villano estupendo que encaja bien en la historia sin quebrar la coherencia de los eventos que vimos en temporadas previas, hay un cast brillante con un par de actores que entregan un trabajo innecesariamente prolijo (Mención especial para Sadie Sink) y desde un punto de vista técnico sigue siendo una hermosa mezcolanza de efectos visuales prácticos con otros computarizados que funcionan de forma estupenda la mayoría del tiempo.

Stranger Things ha aumentado la escala de su aventura, el caos es mayor que nunca y aunque sea un poco intimidante la idea, no puedo hacer más que desear que cuando nos toque ver la temporada final (Que seguramente se va a tardar un buen tiempo en llegar), sepa concluir todos esos hilos tan brillantemente formados que ha establecido desde sus inicios.

Por ahora, no tengo mucho más que decir.
