The big Lebowski (1998) review: I'm scared to say it but...

I admit that The Big Lebowski has been on my watch list for years, and although I felt that I would eventually have to see it, there were many factors that indirectly kept me away from it.

And although the work of the Cohen brothers had been responsible for building a passionate fan base over the years, it is also quite evident that it was characterized by being polarizing, one of those films that you either love or hate, but It never leaves you indifferent.

This polarization is very understandable when watching this film, considering that The Big Lebowski bombards us with many easy-to-appreciate elements (an excellent cast, a modern western style with touches of black comedy, iconic music), but it also gloats about its own mediocrity, leading us to an anticlimactic closing but making it clear that this was the intention from the beginning.

I didn't like it, I must admit, but I admit that since I completed it I couldn't stop thinking about it, how beautiful each of its frames was (no matter how ordinary it was), or how it was full of iconic phrases that connected with a way of looking at the world that is almost impossible not to gravitate towards, I, like many of you, was falling into the clutches of The Dude.

I have read everywhere that this is one of those films that improves with each visit, something that makes all the logic in the world... the big Lebowski is a film that focuses more on its characters than on the events that happen to them, it builds carefully analyzing their dynamics and immersing us in their personalities, in the end we discover that everything makes much more sense than it seems.

My point with this review is to let you see that my distaste for this film is more a consequence of the false expectations generated by reading its premise, especially considering how difficult it is to predict the course events will take after the first act.

I'm not ready to watch it again, but I'm sure that when I do I'll like it.

Admito que The Big Lebowski estaba en mi lista de pendientes desde hace años, y aunque sentía que eventualmente tendría que verla, habían muchas factores que indirectamente me alejaban de ella.

Y es que si bien la obra de los hermanos Cohen se había encargado de construir una apasionada base de fans a lo largo de los años, también es bastante evidente que se caracterizaba por ser polarizante, una de esas películas que o amas u odias, pero nunca te deja indiferente.

Esta polarización es muy entendible al ver la película, considerando que The Big Lebowski nos bombardea con muchos sentidos elementos fáciles de apreciar (Un cast excelente, un estilo de western moderno con toques de comedia negra, música icónica), pero se también se regodea sobre su propia mediocridad, llevándonos a un cierre anticlimático pero dejando claro que esa fue la intención desde el principio.

No me gustó, debo admitirlo, pero reconozco que desde que la completé no pude dejar de pensar en ella, en lo hermoso que resultaba cada uno de sus frames (Por ordinario que fuese), o en como estaba plagada de frases icónicas que conectaban con una forma de ver al mundo hacia la cual es casi imposible no gravitar, yo, al igual que muchos de ustedes, estaba cayendo en las garras de The Dude.

He leído en todos lados que este es de esos filmes que mejora con cada visita, algo que tiene toda la lógica del mundo... the big Lebowski es una película que se enfoca más en sus personajes que en los eventos que les suceden, construye cuidadosamente sus dinámicas y nos empapa en sus personalidades, al final descubrimos que todo tiene mucho más sentido de lo que parece.

Mi punto con esta reseña es dejarles ver qué mi disgusto con esta película es más una consecuencia de las falsas expectativas generadas al leer su premisa, especialmente si consideramos lo complicado que es predecir el curso que van a tomar los eventos luego del primer acto.

No estoy preparado para verla otra vez, pero estoy seguro de que cuando lo haga me va a gustar.
