The Son of Batman (2014) review: remember kids, wear protection.

I'm usually a big fan of DC animated movies, they're usually adaptations of the best stories in comics, they have a high production value, and they know how to treat their audience with respect, embracing their more mature aspects without having to fall into the absurd seriousness, recognizing that in the end, what makes the medium beautiful is the possibility of doing whatever comes to their minds.

As a consequence we have had good works and other bad ones, but generally the result is at least decent, although there are a couple of exceptions that embitter the public a little bit.

The point is that although The Son of Batman does not reach the level of quality of the works most adored by the people (The Dark Knight Returns and The Mask of the Phantasm are perfect examples), it is undeniable that we have more hits than misses.

As its name suggests, this 2014 film directed by Ethan Spaulding focuses on "Damian Wayne", a son conceived as a result of an affair between Bruce and Thalia Al Ghul, daughter of Ras Al Ghul.

Logically, there is a whole intricate plot where Death Stroke tries to take control of the league of shadows and kill Batman, but the whole emotional center of the film revolves instead between the connection that Bruce is trying to forge with his previously unknown son, who almost forcibly tries to assume the role of the new Robin.

Those familiar with the different characters who have passed through this mantle (especially Dick Grayson and Jason Todd), will understand that Damian is a paradigm shift, characterized by being a much more cynical version of Bruce himself and lacking (in principle) a moral compass.

Undoubtedly, this contrast is what causes the biggest points of interest in The Son of Batman, a film that apart from that does not make particularly interesting creative decisions, and that follows a very formulaic scheme.

Does this mean that it is negative? Not at all, it just doesn't have enough strength to rise in the powerful top of the best Dark Knight movies, both in live action and in the animated world.

I appreciate the inclusion of humorous elements that do feel natural, contrary to what has been seen in other movies like Batman and Harley Quinn.

Suelo ser muy fanático de las películas animadas de DC, generalmente son adaptaciones de las mejores historias que hay en los cómics, tienen un valor de producción alto y saben tratar a su audiencia con respeto, abrazando sus aspectos más maduros sin necesidad de caer en la seriedad absurda, reconociendo, que al final, lo que hace que el medio sea hermoso es la posibilidad de hacer lo que se nos ocurra.

Cómo consecuencia hemos tenido obras buenas y otras malas, pero generalmente el resultado suele ser al menos decente, aunque existan un par de excepciones que amargan un poco al público.

La cuestión es que si bien The Son of Batman no alcanza el nivel de calidad de las obras más adoradas por el público (The Dark Knight Returns y The Mask of the Phantasm son ejemplos perfectos), es innegable que tenemos más aciertos que problemas.

Cómo su nombre lo indica, está película del 2014 dirigida por Ethan Spaulding se enfoca en "Damian Wayne", un hijo concebido como consecuencia de una aventura entre Bruce y su amor platónico Thalia Al Ghul, hija de Ras Al Ghul.

Lógicamente, existe toda una trama intrincada en dónde Death Stroke intenta tomar el control de la liga de las sombras y acabar con Batman, pero todo el centro emocional de la película gira más bien entre la conexión que Bruce está tratando de forjar con su hijo hasta entonces desconocido, quien, casi forzosamente intenta asumir el rol del nuevo Robin.

Aquellos familiarizados con los distintos personajes que han pasado por este manto (Especialmente Dick Grayson y Jason Todd), entenderán que Damián es un cambio de paradigma, caracterizado por ser una versión del mismísimo Bruce mucho más cínica y carente (en principio) de una brújula moral.

Sin duda, este contraste es lo que causa la mayor cuota de interés en The Son of Batman, un filme que aparte de eso no toma decisiones creativas particularmente interesantes, y que sigue un esquema muy formulaíco.

¿Esto quiere decir que es negativo? Para nada, solo que no cuenta con suficiente fuerza para elevarse en el poderoso top de las mejores películas del caballero de la noche, tanto en live action como en el mundo animado.

Aprecio la inclusión de elementos humorísticos que si se sienten naturales, contrario a lo visto en otras películas como Batman and Harley Quinn.
