The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) review: Can you sell me this pen?

I saw The Wolf of Wall Street for the first time almost 10 years ago, and, although at that time I had much less experience in the world of cinema, it was inevitable to be attracted to this epic story full of white collar crimes and hedonism, which, Despite being intimidating with a duration of almost 3 hours, it had a level of narrative agility and lightness that many modern blockbusters would kill to have.

It was my introduction to Martin Scorsese and as time went by I became obsessed with the work of the New York filmmaker, an 80-year-old man who continues to generate art with the same power as always and who deserves to be recognized as one of the most influential directors. important of all time, for example we have gems like Casino, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, The Irishman, or the recently released Killers of the Flower Moon.

I admit with a bit of shame that although I enjoyed what Wolf of Wall Street showed me, in the midst of my ignorance I always interpreted it as a more childish version of the same story that I later learned about in the films that I just mentioned, works of art that studied the obsession with money and power from various angles, as well as the long-term cost this would have on our lives and those of our family and friends.

I say ignorance because after revisiting it I discovered that I was wrong, since the way in which Marty decided to portray the story of Jordan Belfort has a more bitter taste than it might seem at first glance, and that far from shamelessly romanticizing this scammer, actually seeks to make us understand how money can totally destroy the scruples of a charismatic man, and how the world we live in will always give him a space to shine.

It is difficult to even find any valid aspect to criticize about this film, considering that his directing style knows how to perfectly mix the neatness of a filmmaker with Scorsese's experience with an almost music video style that fits very well with the moments of madness. excessive

We could also talk about the brilliant performances that parade constantly on screen, starting from Leonardo DiCaprio in the main role of Belfort (Which, by the way, deserved the Oscar), to a cast of secondary characters where actors of the caliber of Jon Bernthal, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie and Matthew McConaughey know how to work magic with a brilliant script that doesn't let us breathe for just a second.

It is a cynical, vulgar work, and it is easy to misinterpret its true intentions; however, seen from the correct angle, it is undeniable that we are facing one of the best films of the entire 21st century.

Vi por primera vez The wolf of wall street hace casi 10 años, y, aunque en ese entonces tenía mucha menos experiencia en el mundo del cine, fue inevitable sentirse atraído ante está épica historia plagada de crímenes de cuello blanco y hedonismo, que, a pesar de intimidar con una duración de casi 3 horas, contaba con un nivel de agilidad y ligereza narrativa que muchos blockbusters modernos matarían por tener.

Fue mi introducción a Martin Scorsese y con el paso del tiempo no hice más que obsesionarme con el trabajo del cineasta neoyorquino, un hombre de 80 años que sigue generando arte con la misma potencia de siempre y que merece ser reconocido como uno de los directores más importantes de todos los tiempos, para muestra tenemos joyas como Casino, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, The Irishman, o la recientemente estrenada Killers of the Flower Moon.

Admito con un poco de vergüenza que si bien disfruté lo que Wolf of Wall Street me demostraba, en medio de mi ignorancia siempre la interpreté como una versión más infantil de la misma historia que conocí posteriormente en los filmes que acabo de mencionar, obras de arte que estudiaban la obsesión con el dinero y el poder desde diversos ángulos, así como el costo que a largo plazo esto causaría en nuestra vida y la de nuestra familia y amigos.

Digo ignorancia porque luego de revisitarla descubrí que me encontraba equivocado, ya que la forma en la que Marty decidió retratar la historia de Jordan Belfort tiene un sabor más amargo de lo que podría parecer de buenas a primeras, y que lejos de romantizar descaradamente a este estafador, en realidad busca hacernos comprender como el dinero puede destruir totalmente los escrúpulos de un hombre carismático, y como el mundo en el que vivimos siempre le dará un espacio para brillar.

Es difícil si quiera encontrar algún aspecto válido que criticar de esta película, considerando que su estilo de dirección sabe mezclar a la perfección la pulcritud de un cineasta con la experiencia de Scorsese con un estilo casi videoclipero que se acopla muy bien a los momentos de locura desmedida.

También podríamos hablar de los brillantes performances que se desfilan a cada rato en pantalla, partiendo desde un Leonardo DiCaprio en el rol principal de Belfort (Que por cierto, merecía el Oscar), hasta un cast de personajes secundarios en dónde actores de la talla de Jon Bernthal, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie y Matthew McConaughey saben hacer magia con un guión brillante que no nos deja respirar por tan solo un segundo.

Es una obra cínica, vulgar, y es fácil malinterpretar sus verdaderas intenciones, no obstante, vista bajo el ángulo correcto es innegable que estamos ante una de las mejores películas de todo el siglo XXI.
