Theater Camp (2023) review: a classic feel-good story.

Although I had my expectations down before seeing it, Theater Camp has become one of my favorite films of the entire year, something it achieves by using the mockumentary format in an agile and ingenious way with a simple and effective premise.

In Theater Camp, as the name suggests, we follow the members of a theater camp in New York as they try to organize their last performance, however, things will be complicated when the founder of the camp falls into a coma and her son puts its property at risk.

Although this may sound quite dramatic, it is important to clarify that this is a film where comedy moments prevail, this of course without ruining the momentum of its own drama in the slightest.

Directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman, Theater Camp is simultaneously a love letter to the performing arts while also criticizing its more pretentious aspects, something that feels incredibly genuine considering it's coming from a group of actors (children and adults) who probably have a lot of experience in the matter, and improvised a good portion of the dialogues and the most brilliant moments of the entire film.

The point is that regardless of whether one can identify or not with the themes this film addresses, it is easy to gravitate towards the affection with which they are handled, and everything flows with such a brutal rhythm that its scant hour and a half duration will fly by.

Noah Galvin, Jimmy Tatro, Ben Platt, Ayo Edebiri and Molly Gordon herself are just some of the names that delight us with their presence, creating a "feel good" film that deserves much more recognition than what it has received, filled with hilarious jokes, good music and a nostalgic but timeless visual style that will survive the passage of time very well.

Aunque tenía mis expectativas por el suelo antes de verla Theater Camp se ha convertido en una de mis películas favoritas de todo el año, algo que consigue empleando el formato de mockumentary de forma ágil e ingeniosa con una premisa simple y efectiva.

En Theater Camp como su nombre lo indica seguimos a los miembros de un campamento de teatro en Nueva York a medida que intentan organizar su última presentación, no obstante, las cosas se verán complicadas cuando la fundadora del campamento cae en un coma y su hijo pone en riesgo la propiedad del mismo.

Aunque esto puede sonar bastante dramático es importante aclarar que estamos ante un filme en dónde los momentos de comedia prevalecen, esto por supuesto sin arruinar en lo más mínimo el momentum de su propio drama.

Dirigida por Molly Gordon y Nick Lieberman, Theater Camp es simultáneamente una carta de amor a las artes escénicas al mismo tiempo que sabe criticar sus aspectos más pretenciosos, algo que se siente increíblemente genuino considerando que viene de parte de un grupo de actores (niños y adultos) que probablemente tienen bastante experiencia en la materia, e improvisaron una buena porción de los diálogos y los momentos más brillantes de todo el film.

El punto es que independientemente de que uno pueda sentirse identificado o no con los temas que está película aborda, es fácil gravitar hacia el cariño con el que los mismos se están manejando, y todo fluye con un ritmo tan brutal que su escasa hora y media de duración pasará volando.

Noah Galvin, Jimmy Tatro, Ben Platt , Ayo Edebiri y la misma Molly Gordon son solo algunos de los nombres que nos deleitan con su presencia, creando un "feel good" film que merece mucho más reconocimiento del que ha recibido, plagado con chistes hilarantes, buena música y un estilo visual nostálgico pero atemporal que sobrevivirá muy bien al paso del tiempo.
