When Harry Met Sally (1989) review: In favour of destiny.

Although in recent years romcoms have lost a lot of relevance, in my opinion it is a film genre that (Put in the right hands) can give rise to wonderful works.

I always like to mention "When Harry Met Sally" as an example because although it is far from the first or the last of its kind, it is a film that knows how to make the most of its simple premise to create a memorable experience that allows us to meet deepens the relationship between two fascinating characters in less than two hours.

Directed by Rob Reiner, the effectiveness of When Harry Met Sally could be due to many factors, from the brilliant performances of Billy Cristal and Meg Ryan, to the masterful script that Reiner himself wrote with Nora Ephron, to the beautiful photography, costumes, music and general atmosphere.

The point is that instead of relying entirely on a silly and arbitrary gimmick (something that by the way is very common in the most recent romantic comedies), When Harry Met Sally relies entirely on the relationship of its protagonists, a chemistry that from the minute one constantly dances between the logical and the incredible, but which ironically is more reminiscent of a real relationship than any other forced attempt by Hollywood during this last decade.

More importantly, even if unconsciously, When Harry Met Sally is an extremely honest study of romantic relationships, capable of simultaneously embracing the sweet and bitter aspects of them, the beauty of our similarities and differences when we are getting to know someone. new and how deeply attractive it can be to connect with them on a level of intimacy that goes far beyond the physical.

Comedy and romance exist in a perfect balance, where one never gets in the way of the other, and both aspects go hand in hand with incredible fluidity thanks to an impeccable rhythm where it is practically impossible to feel bored.

For me, for these and many more reasons, When Harry Met Sally is one of the best films in all of history, although a superficial study of it gives the false idea that it does not have much to offer.

Aunque estos últimos años las romcom han perdido muchísima relevancia, a mi parecer se trata de un género cinematográfico que (Puesto en las manos correctas) puede dar pie a obras maravillosas.

Siempre me gusta mencionar como ejemplo "When Harry Met Sally" porque a pesar de que dista de ser el primero o el último en su especie, es una película que sabe aprovechar al máximo su simple premisa para crear una experiencia memorable que nos permite conocer a profundidad la relación entre dos personajes fascinantes en menos de dos hora.

Dirigida por Rob Reiner, la efectividad de When Harry Met Sally podría deberse a muchos factores, partiendo por las brillantes interpretaciones de Billy Cristal y Meg Ryan, hasta el guión magistral que el mismísimo Reiner escribió junto a Nora Ephron, pasando por la hermosa fotografía, vestuarios, música y ambientación general.

La cuestión es que en vez de sustentarse enteramente sobre una gimmick tonta y arbitraria (Algo que por cierto es muy común en las comedias románticas más recientes), When Harry Met Sally confía totalmente en la relación de sus protagonistas, una química que desde el minuto uno danza constantemente entre lo logico y lo increíble, pero que irónicamente resulta más reminiscente a una relación real que cualquier otro intento forzoso de Hollywood durante esta ultima década.

Más importante aún, aunque sea de manera inconsciente When Harry Met Sally resulta un estudio extremadamente honesto de las relaciones amorosas, capaz de abrazar al mismo tiempo los aspectos dulces y amargos de las mismas, lo hermoso de nuestras similitudes y diferencias cuando estamos conociendo a alguien nuevo y lo profundamente atractivo que puede resultar conectar con los mismos en un nivel de intimidad que va mucho más allá de lo físico.

La comedia y el romance existen en un balance perfecto, en dónde uno nunca interviene en el camino del otro, y ambos aspectos van de la mano con una fluidez increíble gracias a un ritmo impecable en donde es prácticamente imposible sentirse aburrido.

Para mí por estas y muchas razones más When Harry Met Sally es una de las mejores películas de toda la historia, aunque un estudio superficial de la misma de la falsa idea de que no tiene mucho que ofrecer.
