It surprises me that a person as pretentious and select with the roles that he accepts as Jonah Hill decided to be part of such a mediocre project, and one should not spend too many minutes watching "You People" to understand that not even his presence alongside the most excellent Eddie Murphy save what would be one of Netflix's most uncomfortable and conformist experiments in recent months.

Directed by Kenya Barris, You People could be defined as an edgy romcom where a young Jewish man and a black girl (Played by Lauren London) decide to forge a relationship despite cultural differences and the problems that this entails for their families. If you ask me, this is not the worst idea in the world, and in fact, there is a lot of narrative potential in a premise like that.

Unfortunately, in the end we have nothing more than a film obsessed with self-flagellation, using accelerated dialogues and full of forced references to popular culture with the intention of hiding its own mediocrity, lacking a clear focus and with a comedic rhythm that (for the most part of occasions) leaves a lot to be desired.

As someone who is obsessed with the culture of street wear and hip hop, I appreciate the recurrent use of clothing, music and memes as elements that exist to reflect the personality of its protagonists, something that usually "You People "He knows how to execute decently, however, if we clear all these objects from the film it will be quite obvious that the substance is rather thin.

Starting from a disastrous meet cute and going through a large cast of characters unpleasant to the point where they could be considered unrealistic, You People is a boring and generic exploration of two cultures that undoubtedly have much more to offer.

The only thing that stands out in my opinion is the last half hour, giving Murphy some space to shine from a more "dramatic" perspective and taking advantage of the undeniable chemistry that exists between Hill and Lauren London.

You People barely knows how to justify its almost two hours duration, it might get you a couple of laughs, but I feel that there are many more enjoyable alternatives in the genre. It honestly feels like a Twitter argument between two people who are racist and don't realize it.

LOL. Your review was pretty brutal, but I enjoyed this slightly light-hearted conclusion. Despite the negative review, this actually makes me want to watch it in the same way you would stare with mouth agape at a trainwreck.

Hahaha, that's the perfect mindset to watch it

I appreciate your comment 😅
