[Movie] GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a sequel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe series, written and directed by James Gunn and produced by Kevin Feige. Starring Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, AKA Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Rocket voiced by Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista as Drax, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Kurt Russel as Ego, and Michael Rooker as Yondu.

When the Guardians of the Galaxy are hired to protect a valuable battery by a golden race called the Sovereign, Rocket’s true nature leads him to steal some of the batteries when leaving the Alien territory, and he will be hunted to be brought to justice and made an example of.

Peter Quill meets his biological father in an attempt to escape death at the hands of the aliens of the Sovereign. Peter will think from the beginning that he has found all the answers he really wanted about his heritage and is happy to reunite with his biological father.

He will lure him into following him back to his planet in an attempt to show him his heritage, but his main aim was different: to merge his celestial powers with Quill’s celestial trait to wipe out the entire living race, just to be the only surviving creature in existence.

The movie explores the meaning of family beyond bloodlines; while Ego was His Biological father, Yondu was more of a true father figure Peter never realised he had.

His final words to Peter before he died were, “He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn’t your daddy”, defining family by love, loyalty and sacrifice rather than blood.

On the other hand, Gamora and her sister Nebula reconciled their differences, evolving from the constant fights they had into saving each other from death in many instances. Rocket is always finding humour in everything; his personality reveals vulnerability and a fear of abandonment.

The best act for me in the movie was the part between Drax and Mantis; it was so hilarious to watch as well as entertaining at the same time. “When you are ugly, and someone loves you, you know they love you for who you are. Beautiful people never know who to trust”.

Drax used the innocence of Mantis to play with her emotions, calling her ugly and making her accept that she was ugly and also a pet, that people only keep adorable pets and not hideous ones. She came to let them know the danger that they were in, but she was already late, as Ego had already started his plan.

The movie succeeds as an exploration of what it means to belong, balancing humour and action, giving the audience both laughs and tears.
