Neurótica anónima has been one of those films one stumbles upon unexpectedly—without any prior planning—and is grateful for the chance to see.

I was at El Mejunje —a cultural center in central Cuba— having a coffee and just about to head home when the institution's director approached me. He told me that, in a few minutes, the film was going to be screened in the theater at the back of the café, with the lead actress in attendance.

Of course, I stayed and waited, and I don’t regret it. It was an unforgettable experience.

It was a night when much of the city was without electricity—an unfortunately common occurrence for I don’t know how long now—but that didn’t stop the film from being screened. Thanks to the dedication of some workers who went out of their way to secure a battery unit (specifically, an EcoFlow model) and the bare essentials, we were able to enjoy the magic of cinema despite the heat in the theater and the sultry night air.

After a reasonable wait to properly stretch the screen—in accordance with the requirements and attention of the lady of the night, Mirtha Ibarra—the magic happened.

Neurótica anónima—directed by Jorge Perrugorría, who also co-wrote the screenplay with the film's star, Mirtha Ibarra—captivates us from the very beginning thanks to the reputations of its lead actors; each boasts a successful career spanning decades, transcending borders and standing at the pinnacle of both Cuban and international cinema.

To highlight just a few elements that underscore the film's pedigree: the cinematography is by Ernesto Granados and the music by José María Vitier—undoubtedly two virtuosos of their respective arts.

Produced last year and premiering effectively in 2026, the film has won awards at the latest Salento Film Festival in Colombia and the recently concluded Gibara International Low-Budget Film Festival. These accolades continue to demonstrate the quality of Cuban cinema, even amidst the current slump in production.

Interestingly, the film’s screenplay is based on a play of the same name written by Mirtha Ibarra—winner of the 2025 National Film Award—and inspired by a personal experience she had years ago while walking through Old Havana. She discovered a group meeting in a church called "Neurotics Anonymous"—operating alongside an Alcoholics Anonymous group—something I, for one, did not know existed and found quite unique.

Personally, I would not rank this film among the all-time greats of cinema history. I feel the central theme could have been handled more effectively regarding the broader picture and the film's conclusion—an area where I found it most lacking. The internal subplots also failed to develop successfully.

Even so, the film—which begins with the threatened demolition and subsequent defense of a neighborhood cinema in the capital—prompts reflection on universal themes, making us laugh while also fostering empathy for the stories unfolding on screen.

The highlight of the evening came when, just as the film screening concluded, the power was restored, giving us the chance to converse with the lead actress for nearly an hour. Joining her was the Director of the Villa Clara Provincial Film Center, who delighted us with fascinating anecdotes about the history of cinema—stories that encompass part of the legacy of the legendary figures behind this film.

With the kindness, wisdom, and radiance that define her—despite being eighty years old—she graciously answered every question from the audience. She shared details about the work that were new to us, particularly regarding the profound influence of those giants of world cinema, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Juan Carlos Tabío—two men who also played significant roles in her personal life.

I asked Mirtha if we might once again enjoy her stage play (the one that inspired this movie), but she told me no; acting in the theater no longer appeals to her—only film does. I hope that one day she returns to the stage and I get the chance to see her, because theater has a magic of its own.

In the meantime, I’ll say goodbye for now—but not without sending each of you a big, warm hug of light!

Neurótica anónima ha sido una de esas películas que uno encuentra en el camino, sin planificación previa y agradece por la oportunidad.

Estaba en el Mejunje, Centro Cultural de la región central de Cuba, tomando un café y casi a a punto de irme a casa cuando se me acerca el director de dicha institución para decirme que en unos minutos se proyectará ahí, en la sala de teatro que está al fondo de la cafetería, está película con la presencia de su protagonista principal.

Por supuesto me quedé a esperar y no me arrepiento. Fue una experiencia inolvidable.

Era una noche donde no había servicio electroenergético en gran parte de la ciudad (algo lamentablemente cotidiano desde hace no sé ya cuánto tiempo), pero esto no impidió proyectar el filme gracias al empeño de algunos trabajadores que se volcaron en conseguir una batería eléctrica (de las llamadas Ecoflow), y lo mínimo indispensable para que, a pesar del calor de la noche y el teatro, disfrutásemos de la magia del séptimo arte.

Luego de una espera lógica para lograr estirar bien la pantalla, según las exigencias y atención de la dama de la noche, Mirtha Ibarra, se hizo la magia.

Neurótica anónima, dirigida por Jorge Perrugorría, quien además escribió el guión junto a Mirtha Ibarra, protagonista ella a su vez de la película, es una obra que nos atrapa desde el inicio por los propios nombres de cada uno de sus protagonistas, cada uno con trayectorias exitosas que trascienden fronteras desde hace décadas en lo más alto de la cinematografía cubana e internacional.

Por sólo citar algunos de los elementos que distinguen el aval que trae consigo el filme, sepamos que la fotografía es de Ernesto Granados y la música de José María Vitier, dos virtuosos de las artes sin lugar a dudas.

Siendo realizada el año pasado, y prácticamente estrenada durante este 2026, la película ha sido premiada en la última edición del Festival de Cine de Salento, Colombia, y en el recientemente concluido Festival internacional de Cine pobre de Gibara, aspectos que continúan dando muestra de la calidad de la cinematografía cubana, a pesar de lo deprimido en su producción actual.

Como aspecto curioso, el guión de la película parte de una obra de teatro, con el mismo nombre, que escribiese en su momento la propia Mirtha Ibarra, Premio Nacional de Cine 2025, inspirada en una situación personal que vivió hace años durante un paseo por la Habana Vieja y donde descubrió un grupo de terapia grupal en una iglesia que tenía como nombre precisamente Neuróticos Anónimos, funcionando a la par de otro grupo de Alcohólicos Anónimos, algo que al menos yo desconocía existiese y me resultó bien singular.

En lo personal, no calificaría a la película dentro de lo más alto del panorama histórico del cine. Considero que la temática principal podría haberse manejado de un modo más certero a la hora de observar el panorama general y la manera en que concluye la película, aspecto donde más en deuda se me queda. Las subtramas internas, también se me quedan sin una exitosa evolución.

Aún así, resulta una película que, partiendo de un supuesto derribamiento y defensa de un cine de barrio de la capital, nos lleva a la reflexión sobre cuestiones universales haciéndonos reír a la vez que nos sensibiliza con las historias manifiestas.

Lo más valioso de la noche devino cuando, terminando la proyección del filme, se restableció el servicio eléctrico y tuvimos la oportunidad de compartir palabras con la protagonista durante casi una hora. Junto a ella, el Director del Centro Provincial de Cine de Villa Clara, quien también nos deleitó con interesantes anécdotas sobre la historia del cine que encierra a parte del legado de los referentes de esta película.

Ella, con la amabilidad, sapiencia, y luz que le caracteriza, a pesar de tener ya ochenta años de edad, supo contestar a cada pregunta del público. Nos contó detalles de la obra que desconocíamos, sobre todo por tener tanta influencia de esos monstruos del cine mundial que respondían a los nombres de Tomás Gutiérrez Alea y Juan Carlos Tabío, dos seres muy relacionados a su vida personal además.

Le pregunté a Mirtha si podríamos volver a disfrutar de su obra de teatro (la que inspiró está película) y me respondió que no, ya no le estimula actuar en teatros, solo en cine. Ojalá algún día retorne a las tablas y pueda verla porque el teatro también tiene su magia.
