One of the Best Individual Movies in All of Marvel | Review: Black Panther
A King Unlike Any Other
I recently found myself watching some movies for the second time that I thought were really good but only saw once when they first came out. Now that I've gone back to them, I was able to enjoy them as much as the first time, but with a slightly broader view of the film, noticing more details, appreciating the good plots and performances of each actor who stands out for their talent and effort in bringing the character to life. This time, we're going to review Black Panther, one of my favorite Marvel movies to date. Warning: this review contains spoilers.
Un Rey Diferente al Resto
Hace poco me vi en la tarea de ver por segunda vez alguna películas que para mí fueron muy buenas y que solo vi una sola vez en su momento, ahora cuando regresé a ellas pude disfrutarlas como el primer día pero con una visión un poco más amplia de la película, dándome cuenta de más detalles, apreciando las buenas tramas e interpretaciones de cada actor que actor que destaca por su talento y esfuerzo por darle vida al personaje. En esta ocasión, vamos con la review de Black Panther, una de mis películas favoritas de Marvel hasta la fecha. Aviso que contiene sopilers.
SourceFirst, let's take a look at what Black Panther is about. Following the death of his father during the events of Civil War, T'Challa returns to his nation to assume his new role as king of Wakanda. He will have to face an enemy who will push him beyond his limits in order to protect his nation. Black Panther is a movie that I didn't know I wanted to see at the time. Before, I had almost no reference to the character other than a few appearances I managed to see in an animated series and little else, but his brief appearances in Civil War made the character really catch my attention.
Black Panther is not an origin story as such, or at least not entirely. I would say it is more about T'Challa's journey to discover what kind of king he wants to be for the people of Wakanda: a king who will continue with the traditions that almost brought his own nation to ruin, or a king who will do whatever it takes for his people to survive. T'Challa's development and journey in this film is very well done. Little by little, we see how he becomes both a hero and a king worthy of the throne, how he had an idea of his father as the perfect man, and how he must create his own identity, realizing that even people like them have burdens too heavy to bear.
Primero veamos sobre qué va Black Panther. Tras la muerte de su padre, en los eventos que ocurrieron en Civil War, T’Challa regresa a su nación para ahora asumir su nuevo cargo como el rey de Wakanda, tendrá que enfrentarse a un enemigo que superará sus límites y todo para proteger a su nación. Black Panther es una película que en su momento no sabía que quería ver, antes no tenía casi ninguna referencia del personaje más que algunas apariciones que logré ver en una serie animada y poco más pero sus cortas apariciones en Civil War hicieron que el personajes me llamara mucho la atención.
Black Panther no es una película de orígenes como tal, o por lo menos en su mayoría, diría que más bien es el viaje de T’Challa para descubrir qué clase de rey quiere ser para el pueblo de Wakanda, un rey que seguirá con las tradiciones que casi traen las ruinas a su propia nación o un rey que hará lo necesario para que su pueblo sobreviva. Todo el desarrollo de T’Challa y su viaje en esta película es muy buena, poco a poco nos damos cuenta cómo se va convirtiendo tanto en héroe como un rey digno del trono, la idea de hombre perfecto que tenía sobre su padre y cómo debe crear la suya dando cuenta que aun para personas como ellos existen cargas tan grandes que no pueden llevar.
SourceThe actors' performances are a big plus. Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa/Black Panther does a great job. I don't know how far removed he is from the comics, as I don't read them, but here I can say that he brings a lot to the character and that his performance is one of the best. Michael B. Jordan is a very good villain. I had previously seen him as a hero in the Fantastic Four movie, but that's another story. Here, he sets the bar high as the main antagonist, apart from being one of the strongest narrative points for T'Challa's development. Letitia Wright is a great addition with the charisma of her character, Danai Gurira, and Lupita Nyong'o are also actresses who steal the show on several occasions.
The soundtrack is one of the best parts of the movie, although I did feel that the raps were a little out of place at times, but that's just my personal taste. I really like rap, but in some scenes I think it's not appropriate. The special effects are always impressive, and Marvel does them very well, or at least they did before the Infinity Saga ended, and this film is no exception. The set design, how futuristic it feels with all the technology Wakanda has, the costumes, weapons, shields, and Wakanda itself, is simply impressive to see.
Las interpretaciones de los actores es un gran punto a favor, Chadwick Boseman como T’Challa/Black Panther hace un buen trabajo, no sé qué tan alejado esté de los comics ya que no los leo pero aquí puedo decir que aporta mucho al personaje y que participación es de las mejores. Michael B. Jordan es un muy buen villano, anteriormente lo había visto como héroe en la película de los 4 Fantásticos pero eso ya es otro tema, aquí deja el listón a una buena altura como antagonista principal, aparte de que narrativamente es unos de los puntos más fuertes para el desarrollo de T’Challa. Letitia Wright es un gran aporte con el carisma de su personaje, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong’o también son actrices que se roban la pantalla en varias ocasiones.
El soundtrack ni se diga, es de los mejores puntos de la película, aunque si bien es ciertos que en algunos momentos se me hacía que los raps quedaban un poco fuera de lugar, esto lo digo basándome enteramente en mi gusto, me gusta mucho el rap pero en algunas escenas pienso que no es su lugar. Los efectos especiales son algo que siempre impresiona y que Marvel hace muy bien, o por lo menos antes que termina la saga del inifito, y aquí no es la excepción. El modelado de los escenarios, cómo realmente se siente algo futurista con toda la tecnología que maneja Wakanda, los trajes, armas, escudos y la propia Wakanda en sí, simplemente es algo que impresiona al verla.
SourceNow that I've seen it for the second time, I noticed many continuity errors that I missed the first time around. I found it very funny to notice them, not that they affect my enjoyment of the film that much, but I do think that the most observant viewers will have noticed them at the time. Seeing it again was also like reliving those moments when I saw it for the first time with my sister. We liked it so much that we ended up doing our own version of the greeting between T'Challa and Shuri (not that it's so obvious how much we liked the movie).
To date, I haven't seen the second part of this film, but I think Chadwick Boseman brings a lot to it. It's like Robert Downey Jr.—it seems like they were born to play the character. Sadly, Chadwick passed away, but he set the bar very high as Black Panther. The day will come when I can see Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Ahora que la vi por segunda vez, logré darme cuenta de muchos errores de continuidad que a la primera se me pasaron por alto, me hizo mucha gracia darme cuenta de ellos tampoco es que afecten tanto al momento de disfrutar la película, pero sí creo que los más observadores en su momento se habrán dado cuenta. Volverla a ver también fue revivir aquellos momentos que cuando la vi por primera vez con mi hermana, nos gustó tanto que terminamos haciendo nuestra propia versión del saludo entre T’Challa y Shuri (que no se note tanto que nos gustó la película).
Hasta la fecha no he visto la segunda parte de esta película, creo que Chadwick Boseman le dan un gran toque a la película, es como en el caso de Robert Downey Jr., parece que nacieron para interpretar al personaje, lastimosamente Chadwick falleció pero dejo un listón bien alto como Black Panther, ya llegará el día en que pueda ver Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
SourceThe pace of the film is quite entertaining, moving forward when it needs to, not rushing to show things but not lagging behind either. It's true that on some occasions it takes a very slight break and gives the impression of slowing down, but these occasions are few and far between, and mostly because they are parts that warrant it. The choreography for the action scenes is very good. So far, I haven't noticed anyone pretending to be hit without the actor actually doing so, which is a very good point.
Black Panther is a very good Marvel movie for introducing a character to its universe. It's not a movie that tells the character's origins or anything like that, but rather explores new facets of the character, and that, at least for me, adds a lot to the movie's intent. My recommendation is that you watch it, give it a chance if you haven't seen it yet, and if you have already seen it and want to refresh your memory and notice details you missed the first time around, I also invite you to enjoy Black Panther again.
El ritmo de la película es bastante entretenido, avanza cuando lo tiene que hacer, no se apresura en mostrar las cosas pero tampoco se atrasa, sí que es verdad que en algunas ocasiones se toma un muy leve descanso y da la sensación de ir lenta pero son contadas las ocasiones que eso ocurre y más que todo porque son partes que lo ameritan. Las coreografías para las escenas de acción son muy buenas, hasta el momento no me he percatado de personas haciendo el gesto de ser golpeados sin el actor lo haga y eso es muy buen punto.
Black Panther es una muy buena película de Marvel para introducir a un personaje a su universo, no es una película que cuenta los orígenes del mismo ni nada por el estilo, sino que explora nuevas facetas del personaje y eso, por lo menos para mí, aporta mucho a la intención de la película. Mi recomendación, es que la vean, le den una oportunidad si no la han visto y si ya lo hicieron y quieren refrescar la memoria y darse cuenta de detalles que pasaron por alto a la primera, también los invito a volver a disfrutar de Black Panther.
