Reality can be more cruel than we usually believe | Review: The Pale Blue Eye
The truth is often right before your eyes, but you can't always see it.
Mystery, crime, detectives, and lots and lots of intrigue to discover what really happened, along with some plot twists that, while not obvious at first glance, become apparent halfway through the story. These types of stories, whether in movies, series, documentaries, or books, are the ones that catch my attention the most. Anything related to police work, where a crime must be solved and a culprit found, are my favorite stories. Los Crímenes de la Academia is a film that was released two years ago, but I only recently had the opportunity to see it, and I can say that it was worth the wait.

Misterio, crímenes, detectives y mucha pero mucha intriga por descubrir lo que realmente pasó junto a unos de los plot twist, que si no bien no se veían venir a simple vista, se deja ver un poco a mitad de la historia. Este tipo de historias ya sea en películas, series, documentales o libros son las que más llaman mi atención, todo el tema policiaco donde hay que resolver un crimen y encontrar un culpable son de mis historias favoritas. Los Crímenes de la Academia es una película que ya lleva dos años de haberse estrenado pero que hasta hace poco tengo la oportunidad de ver y puedo decir que la espera valió la pena.

As usual, let's first take a look at the plot of this film starring Christian Bale and Harry Melling. In this story, we meet Agustus Landor, a veteran detective who has to solve a series of murders at a military academy alongside a cadet who will go on to become a famous writer, Edgar Allan Poe. That's how simple the plot of this film is, but let me tell you that the interesting part comes as the story unfolds. At first glance, the synopsis may not grab your attention, but if you decide to give it a chance, you may not regret it.
The film is set in 1830, which we learn at the beginning of the film. As for its length, I must say that it is a little long for a conflict that could perhaps have been resolved in fewer hours, However, since these films are my guilty pleasure, I can overlook this. On the other hand, I also know that not everyone will like it, as it does feel a bit long, but not so dense that it is difficult to digest. The pace is normal, but at times it can be slow, taking breaks between steps and discoveries to delve a little deeper into the characters and the backstory that gradually gives way to the origin of the mystery of the murders.
Como ya es de costumbre, primero veamos cuál es la trama que mueve esta película protagonizada por Christian Bale y Harry Melling. En esta historia nos encontramos con Agustus Landor, un veterano detective que tendrá que resolver una serie de asesinatos en una academia militar junto a un cadete que terminará convirtiéndose un famoso escritor, Edgar Allan Poe. Así de sencilla es la trama de esta película pero déjame decirte que lo interesante viene cuando con el desarrollo, a simple vista puede que la sinopsis no te llame mucho la atención pero si decides darle una oportunidad quizás no te arrepientas.
La película está ambientada en el año 1830 y esto nos lo dejan saber a inicios de la película, en cuanto a la duración si debo decir que es un poco larga para un conflicto que pudo, quizás, resolverse en menos horas, pero como estas películas son mi gusto culposo puedo pasar por alto este, por otra parte también sé que no a todo el mundo le gustará ya que sí se llega a sentir que es un poco larga pero no tan densa para digerir. Su ritmo es normal, pero en ocasiones llega a ser lento, se toma sus pausas entre pisas y descubrimientos para ahondar un poco más entre los personajes y la historia de fondo que poco a poco va dando paso al origen del misterio de los asesinatos.
SourceThe performances by Christian and Harry are phenomenal, as they are the characters who stand out most in this work, but we mustn't overlook the other actors, who do a great job giving their characters that mystical touch and typical clumsiness. If you have the opportunity to watch the film with good sound, I highly recommend it. While watching it with my headphones, I couldn't help but feel like I was in a movie theater, given how well the audio is done in this film. The sets and cinematography are dazzling in their own right. Although we only see snowy landscapes, they are well cared for, as are the interiors.
The plot itself, although nothing out of the ordinary, deals with various themes such as the duality of values in a military academy and the behavior of its cadets, on the one hand, and religious themes that fade away once the main conflict is resolved, and what a person is capable of doing for a loved one. The mystery of who is the murderer responsible for all these deaths is not resolved until the end, as is customary in these stories. The interesting part comes when it is discovered that the detective investigating this macabre case is the perpetrator of the crimes. The film does a good job of disguising the real culprit, as no one would suspect that the detective himself could be the culprit.
Las actuaciones por su parte son fenomenales por parte de Christian y Harry siendo los personajes que más destacan en esta obra, tampoco hay que desmeritar a los otros actores que hacen muy bien su trabajo dándole ese toque místico y típico personajes medio torpe para las cosas. Si tienen la oportunidad ver la película con un buen sonido a la mano, se los recomiendo a más no poder, mientras que la veía con mis auriculares no podía evitar sentirme como en una sala de cine con lo bien cuidado que esta el audio en esta película. Los escenarios y la fotografía deslumbran por sí solos, aunque solo vemos paisajes nevados están más bien cuidados al igual que los interiores.
La trama por sí sola, aunque nada del otro mundo, trata diversos temas como lo es la dualidad de los valores de una academia militar y la conducta de sus cadetes, por una parte, rosa los temas religiosos pero que mueren una vez el conflicto principal es resuelto, y lo suficientemente que es capaz de hacer una persona por un ser querido. El misterio sobre quién es el asesino autor de todas esas muertes no se resuelve hasta el final como es debido en todas estas historias, lo interesante viene cuando se descubre que el mismo detective que está investigando este macabro caso es el mismo autor de los crímenes. La película hace un buen trabajo al disfrazar al verdadero culpable, ya que nadie sospecharía que el culpable podría ser el mismo detective.
SourceRevenge is another theme that the film discreetly addresses, and we are not made aware of it until the end, when Poe cleverly uncovers everything behind it due to a small “oversight” by Landor. This plot may not be the best representation of “saved by the script” that exists, After discovering who was responsible for his daughter's rape, which led her to commit suicide, Landor goes in search of the guilty cadets. What he didn't know was that there was another conflict with the Marquis family, where his actions only facilitated the family's witchcraft and covered up their crimes perfectly. As they say in my country, “it fit like a glove.”
Although this whole plot does a good job of concealing the mystery surrounding the murders, let's say that at times it leaves certain clues as to what may have happened to Landor's daughter, which raises some alarm bells. In one scene, we see her with wounds on her face that could cause a stir in the midst of all that subplot, but it's not until the end that we realize there's still a large part of the film left to finish once the Marquis case is solved and the whole issue of witchcraft and Lea's epileptic seizures is resolved. Without a doubt, this is a great plot twist that left me very impressed, as you end up suspecting everyone, even Poe himself, but never the detective.
La venganza es otro de los temas que discretamente trata la película y no se nos dejas saber sino hasta el final cuando Poe hábilmente descubre todo lo que hay detrás por un pequeño “descuido” de Landor. Esta trama no puede ser la mejor representación de “salvado por el guion” que pueda existir, Landor tras decubrir quienes fueron los culpables de la violación de su hija y que eso la llevara a cometer suicidio, va en busca de los cadetes culpables lo que él no sabía es que había otro conflicto con la familia Marquis donde sus acciones solo facilitaban el trabajo de hechicería a la familia y encubrían sus crímenes a la perfección, como dicen en mi país: “Le cayó como anillo al dedo”.
Si bien toda esta trama oculta bien todo el misterio de los asesinatos digamos que en ocasiones deja cierta pista sobre lo que pudo haber pasado con la hija de Landor que despierta un poco las alarmas, en una escenas la vemos a ella con unas heridas en el rostro que puede llegar a hacer ruido en medio de toda esa subtrama pero no es hasta el final cuando nos damos cuenta que todavía queda gran parte de película por terminar una vez se resuelve el caso de los Marquis y todo el tema de la hechicería junto a los ataques epilépticos de Lea. Sin duda alguna, un gran plot twist que me dejo muy impresionado ya que puedes llegar a sospechar de todos, hasta del mismo Poe, pero nunca del detective.

Although it can feel a little slow at times, let's say that it “rewards” us with a great dénouement to all this mystery to be solved. The ending is somewhat open-ended, leaving us with the impression that Landor either abandoned his daughter or committed suicide in the same place as her. I prefer to believe the former rather than the latter, but this part is left up to each viewer to decide.
I recommend it if you like this type of detective story, crime stories, and so on. For some, it may seem very long, and that is something that can work against it when you watch it, so if it really intrigues you enough, go ahead and watch it; otherwise, you may feel that it is too long. Una gran película con una trama bastante interesante e intrigante con cada minuto que avanza que, si bien puede llegar a notarse como un poco lenta en ocasiones, digamos que “recompensa” con ese gran desenlace a todo este misterio por resolver, su final es como una especie de final abierto ya que nos deja la impresión de que Landor se desprendió de su hija o se suicidó en el mismo lugar que ella, prefiero creer la primera opción antes que la segunda pero ya esta parte queda en manos de cada espectador.
Se las recomiendo si les gusta este tipo de historias de detectives, crímenes y demás, para algunos puede parecer muy largo y eso es algo que al momento de verla le puede jugar en contra, así que si realmente te genera la suficiente intriga adelante, puedes verla de caso contrario puedes llegar a sentir que es muy larga.
