Souls Eternally Destined to Meet | Review: Past Lives
Past Lives and Their Impact on the Present.
Hey there, people!!! I hope everyone is doing great. This time we are back with another movie from A24, a movie studio that got me hooked the first time when I saw Green Knight and motivated me to see more of their productions with Civil War. This is kind of like a mini section that I haven't given a name as such yet, but basically I'll be reviewing or analyzing film from certain studios, some sagas and some directors. In the same line of A24, it was Past Lives' turn. As always, this review will have spoilers so keep reading at your own discretion, I warned you.
Las Vidas Pasadas y su Repercusión en el Presente.
¡¡Hey qué tal, gente!! Espero que todos se encuentren excelentemente bien. En esta oportunidad volvemos con otra película de A24, un estudio de películas que me enganchó la primera vez cuando vi Green Knight y que me motivó a ver más de sus producciones con Civil War. Esta es como una especie de mini sección a la que todavía no le he dado un nombre como tal, pero básicamente estaré reseñando o analizando película de ciertos estudios, algunas sagas y algunos directores. En la misma línea de A24, le tocó el turno a Past Lives. Como siempre, esta review tendrá spoilers así que sigan leyendo bajo su criterio, ya les advertí.
Source A24First things first, and the first thing is to know what Past Lives is about. The film puts us in the shoes of Nora and Hae Sung, two great childhood friends who have to separate when Nora's parents move from South Korea. Decades later these friends re-establish communication and will have to face destiny, love and the difficult decisions that characterize so much of what we call life.
From what I was reading, Past Lives is also a kind of biography of the director Celine Song. This movie deals with very, very interesting topics such as reincarnations, important decisions in our lives where there is no turning back and everything that could have been in another life. Watching Past Lives reminded me a lot of Your Name, a Japanese animated film that touches on the theme of the red thread and the connections between two souls destined to be together, only this one there is no “happy ending” for our protagonist but the one they needed.
Primero es lo primero, y lo primero es saber de qué va Past Lives. La película nos sitúa en los zapatos de Nora y Hae Sung, dos grandes amigos de la infancia que se tiene que separar cuando los padres de Nora se mudan de Corea del Sur. Décadas después estos amigos se reestablecen comunicación y tendrán que enfrentarse al destino, al amor y las decisiones difíciles que tanto caracterizan a esto que llamamos vida.
Por lo que estuve leyendo, Past Lives también es como una especie de biografía de la directora Celine Song. Esta película trata temas muy pero muy interesantes como las reencarnaciones, decisiones importantes en nuestras vidas donde ya no hay vuelta atrás y todo lo que pudo ser en otra vida. Viendo Past Lives me recordé mucho de Your Name, una película de animación Japonesa que toca el tema del hilo rojo y las conexiones entre dos almas destinadas a estar juntas, solo que esta no hay “final feliz” para nuestro protagonista pero sí el que necesitaban.
SourcePast Lives is a romantic story about what could have been and was not, what could have happened in another life if the necessary conditions were met for two people to be together, here we see how despite their reunions do not end in anything but the closing of a cycle for both. Nora and Hae Sung, two friends who live with the memory of the people they were 12 or 24 years ago, the fact of seeing how they meet again after so many years and you can feel in the air that maybe they still feel something for each other makes the theme of reincarnations a little more credible.
The film deals a lot with the theme of In-Yun which means destiny or providence, especially in the context of romantic relationships it refers to the invisible connection that binds two people destined to meet in their future lives, suggesting that current relationships have been occurring from past lives. In the film this concept is introduced by Nora when she meets Arthur at the artists' residence but at a certain point we are given to understand that this concept, or belief, is not only limited to relationships between couples as Hae Sung tells Arthur at the bar that they are also part of an In-Yun.
Past Lives es una historia romántica sobre lo que pudo haber sido y no fue, lo que pudo pasar en otra vida si se cumplían las condiciones necesarias para que dos personas estuvieran juntas, aquí vemos como a pesar de sus reencuentros no terminan en nada que más el cierre de un ciclo para ambos. Nora y Hae Sung, dos amigos que viven con el recuerdo de las personas que eran hace 12 o 24 años, el hecho de ver cómo se reencuentran después de tantos años y se puede palpar en el aire que quizás todavía sienten algo el uno por el otro hace un poco más creíble el tema de las reencarnaciones.
La película trata mucho el tema de In-Yun que significa destino o providencia, especialmente en el contexto de las relaciones románticas se refiere a la conexión invisible que une a dos personas destinadas a encontrarse en sus futuras vidas, sugiriendo que las relaciones actuales han venido ocurriendo desde vidas pasadas. En la película este concepto es presentado por Nora cuando se encuentra con Arthur en la residencia para artistas pero en cierto punto nos dan a entender que este concepto, o creencia, no solo se limita a las relaciones entre parejas ya que Hae Sung le dice a Arthur en el bar que ellos también forman parte de un In-Yun.
SourceThe film takes its time, it is engrossed in showing what the relationship between Nora and Hae Sung is like over those 24 years and how maybe, just maybe, they did have the opportunity to be together only they didn't take on the challenges that this presented, after all one of them had to give up some aspirations of things they wanted to do. The film presents a lot of silence, where only the scenes and the walks speak for themselves, it is a film capable of conveying a lot in a few words at crucial moments.
It is not a boring movie or anything like that, I think that if you pay enough attention you can realize many things that the film wants to convey that yes, if you went through a situation of this style or you are currently, believe me that the film will hurt a little, because it manages to put you in the shoes of both protagonists and even you question your past relationships. Undoubtedly, a great job by Celine Song.
La película se toma su tiempo, se enfrasca en mostrar cómo es la relación entre Nora y Hae Sung a lo largo de esos 24 años y cómo quizás, solo quizás, sí tenían la oportunidad de estar juntos solo que no asumieron los retos que esto presentaba, después de todo uno de ellos tenía que dejar de lado algunas aspiraciones de cosas que querían hacer. La película presenta mucho silencio, donde solo las escenas y las caminatas hablan por sí solas, es una película capaz de trasmitir mucho en con pocas palabras en momentos cruciales.
No se hace una película aburrida ni nada por el estilo, creo que si le prestas la suficiente atención podrás darte cuenta de muchas cosas que la película quiere transmitir eso sí, si pasaste por una situación de este estilo o lo estas actualmente, créeme que te dolerá un poco la película, pues, logra colocarte en los zapatos de ambos protagonistas y hasta te cuestionas tus relaciones pasadas. Sin duda, un gran trabajo por parte de Celine Song.
SourceI recommend watching Past Lives, it is quite an experience and you get to see certain things in retrospect, I like to call it “The movie that could have been and wasn't”. A plot that entertains, that manages to present how in the end two people end up being able to close a cycle that had been asking for a while, speaking in terms of the story. Recomiendo ver Past Lives, es todo una experiencia y logras ver ciertas cosas en retrospectivas, me gusta la llamarla “La película de pudo ser y no fue”. Una trama que entretiene, que lograr presentar cómo al final terminan siendo dos personas capaces de cerrar un ciclo que a lo lejos lo venía pidiendo desde hace un rato, hablando en términos de la historia.
