Starting a Battle Royale-Style Dystopian Saga
Adaptations of books into films almost always receive mixed reviews. In the few I have seen, they are never entirely good or entirely bad; there is always a kind of middle ground. In this case, I will only dare to recount my experience with the films, as they are the only ones I have seen and I have not read any books in this series, so I will try to limit myself by saying that it is an excellent adaptation, as I have no point of reference in terms of the literary novels.

Las adaptaciones de libros a películas casi siempre reciben criticas variadas, en las pocas que he visto nunca son totalmente buenas o totalmente malas, siempre hay como una especie de punto media. En este caso solo me atreveré a contar mi experiencia con las películas ya que son las únicas que he visto y no he leído ningún libro de esta saga, así que trataré de limitarme al decir que es una excelente adaptación ya que no tengo un punto referencia en cuando a sus novelas literarias.
SourceThe Hunger Games, a dystopian teen fantasy that I'm not sure how much it's really for that audience, but the thing is, I saw the first movie a few years ago, which is the one we'll be reviewing in this post, and then I saw the sequels later on. A few days ago, I found myself taking another look at this saga, as I have fond memories of it and was curious to see what details I would notice on this second viewing.
As always, let's first take a look at what The Hunger Games is about. In present-day North America, the capital of Panem has a tradition of selecting two “Tributes,” one boy and one girl, to compete in an event called “The Hunger Games.” Each person selected must fight to the death, and only one will be the winner, in order to remember the revolution and keep the 12 districts that make up the world of The Hunger Games under control.
Los Juegos del Hambre, una fantasía distócica adolescente que no sé hasta qué punto deja de ser para ese tipo de público, lo cierto es que hace ya varios años vi la primera entrega, que es la que estaremos reseñando en este post, y tiempo después vi sus secuelas. Hace unos días me vi en la tarea de darle otro vistazo a esta saga ya que la recuerdo de buena manera y me dio algo de curiosidad a ver qué detalles alcanza a notar en esta segunda pasada.
Como siempre, primero veamos sobre qué va Los Juegos del Hambre. En el actual Norteamérica, la capital de Panem tiene como tradición seleccionar a dos “Tributos”, un niño y una niña, para competir en un evento llamado “Los Juegos del Hambre”. Cada persona seleccionada debe pelear hasta la muerte y solo uno será el ganador, esto con el fin de recordar la revolución y mantener bajo control a los 12 distritos que conforman el mundo de Los Juegos del Hambre.
SourceAt first glance, it's not the kind of story I would watch on my own, but since part of my childhood and adolescence was surrounded by people who liked this type of story, I developed a certain taste for them. On two occasions, I went to the cinema to see the last two films in this saga, and from what I remember, I quite enjoyed them. This film was released back in 2012, so it's a few years old now, but it hasn't aged that badly. It still holds up, and I found it entertaining enough while I was watching it.
The film takes its time, it doesn't have a fast pace but it's not slow either, it moves calmly and knows how to grab your attention. Let's say that the film is divided into two parts, a first half where we are introduced to the whole plot, the reason why the games exist, we see all the characters, or at least the most important ones, the training and everything they have to do in front of the cameras. Nothing out of the ordinary in this first half, a way of putting us in context before the most exciting part of the story. Obviously, those who have read the book will already know everything that happens and will be comparing the versions or seeing how accurate it is to the original work.
A primera vista no es el tipo de tramas que yo vería por mi propia cuenta, pero como parte de mi infancia y adolescencia estuvo rodeada de personas a las que les gustaba este tipo de tramas, fui tomando cierto gusto por estas historias, en dos ocasiones me tocó ir al cine a ver las dos últimas películas de esta saga y de lo que recuerdo me agradaron bastante. Esta película se estrenó por allá en el 2012, ya tiene unos cuantos añitos encima pero tampoco le pesan tanto que digamos, aún logra mantenerse y de mi tiempo mientras la veía logró entretenerme lo suficiente.
La película se toma su tiempo, no tiene un ritmo rápido pero tampoco lento, va con calma y sabe cómo llamar tu atención. Digamos que la película se divide en dos partes, una primera mitad donde se nos presenta toda la trama, la razón por que existen los juegos, vemos a todos los personajes o por lo menos a los más importantes, el entrenamiento y todo lo que tienen que hacer frente a las cámaras. Nada fuera de lo común con esta primera mitad, una manera de colocarnos en contexto antes de la parte más emocionante de la historia, obviamente que aquellas personas que leyeron el libro ya sabrán todo lo que pasa y estarán comparando las versiones o viendo qué tan acertada está junto a la obra original.
SourceThe second half of the film is the games themselves, the icing on the cake, the raison d'être for this saga. This part is the best part of the whole film, as it's time to put the talk and propaganda aside and focus on what's really important. This entire section shows how ruthless they can be in order to win the games, and it's no wonder, since losing means losing your life, so there aren't many options. However, we see that Katniss and Peeta manage to win the games thanks to the strategy they used, which was not very popular with the high command in the Capitol.
In general, the film maintains a good pace; it's not slow enough to bore you, but it's also not so fast that you feel like everything is happening too quickly. As I mentioned earlier, it's divided into two parts, each of which progresses at its own pace and intensity. While it's true that it doesn't have the same epic quality as its sequel or later installments, this first installment works quite well as what it is: a solid enough film that lays the groundwork for the next installments and leaves you wanting to see more about these characters and their dystopian world.
La segunda mitad de la película son los juegos en sí, la cereza del pastel, el motivo de ser para esta saga. Esta parte es la mejor transcurre en toda la película, llega el momento de dejar las charlas y propagandas a un lado para centrarnos en lo verdaderamente importante. Toda esta parte muestra lo despiadado que pueden llegar a ser con tal de ganar los juegos, y es que no se trata de menos ya que perder significa perder la vida, así que muchas opciones no hay, aunque vemos que Katniss y Peeta logran ganar los juegos por la estrategia que usaron lo cual no fue mucho del agrado del alto mando en el Capitolio.
En reglas generales, la película mantiene un buen ritmo, no es lo suficientemente lenta para aburrirte pero tampoco demasiado rápida para sentir que todo pasa de un momento a otro, como les dije hace un momento, se divide en dos partes y cada una avanza a su ritmo e intensidad propia. Si bien es cierto que no cuenta con una epicidad equiparable a su secuela o posteriores, esta primera entrega funciona bastante bien como lo que es: una película lo suficientemente sólida que sienta sus bases para las próximas entregas y con un abre bocas que, en cierto modo, te deja con ganas de ver más acerca de estos personajes y de su mundo distopico.
SourceVisually, you won't find anything particularly impressive, as that's not its strong point. I would say that its strength lies in its narrative, although some things that happen in the film are a little predictable and some actions could have been avoided, but it all works for the good of the script and the development of the characters. How good is the adaptation? I won't venture into that territory because I haven't read the books, so if you have, I invite you to leave your opinion and comment to give it a rating as an adaptation of a literary work.
The Hunger Games is a saga that will appeal to a slightly more adolescent audience, but it is not specifically designed for that. If you are looking for a good story, something that fills you with intrigue and makes you want to know more, characters curious enough to make you want to know more about their history, let me tell you that you can enter this world with peace of mind and enjoy the story it has to offer. My recommendation is that you give it a chance. If you don't like teenage plots and dystopian futures, you can safely skip this movie.
Visualmente no te vas a encontrar con una gran y excelente maravilla ya que su fuerte no radica en eso, diría más bien que es su narrativa, aunque algunas cosas que pasan en la película son un poco predecibles y acciones que se pueden evitar, pero todo obra para el bien del guion y el desarrollo de los personajes ¿Qué tan buena adaptación es? En ese terreno no me meto porque no he leído los libros, así que si tu lo hiciste te invito a dejar tu opinión y comentar para darle una calificación como adaptación de una obra literaria.
Los Juegos del Hambre es una saga que atraerá a un público un poco más adolescente por lo que puede pero tampoco está diseñado específicamente para eso, si estas en busca de una buena historia, algo que te llene de intriga y quieras saber más, personajes lo suficientemente curiosos como para querer saber más sobre su historia, déjame decirte que puede entrar en este mundo con tranquilidad y disfrutar que la historia que tiene para brindarte. Mi recomendación es que les des una oportunidad, si no te gustan las tramas adolescentes y de futuros distopicos puedes pasar de esta película tranquilamente.
