Sovereign||an extremist and a lawbreaking man
Greetings!
source
Sovereign is a boring American criminal movie which took me time to understand as it was a complex movie. But I later got to understand the movie in the long run when events began to unfold.
The film sovereign, as directed by christian Swegal, starred actors like Nick Offerman, also known as Jerry Kane was the main character in the movie, he was so confident about his sovereign belief.
Also we have Jacob Tremblay, who acted as Joe Kane in the movie, he's the son of Jerry Kane who was in tandem with his father belief, though he got tired at some point, but even at that, he was the one that killed the police officer to save his father from the police arrest.
Still in the movie, we have characters like John Bouchart, Patty Bouchart, Lesley Anne, a close ally of Jerry Kane. Also, we have Adam Bouchart and Jess Bouchart. All these characters acted perfectly as required by the movie director.
PLOT
The movie started on a sad note, but it's a in medial rex of a technique which was used in starting the first scene of the movie. In medial rex is used in a movie when the movie starts from the middle just to prepare the watcher or audience ahead of what to expect in the movie.
So, like I said earlier, the movie started with a crime scene where two police officer was killed by unknown armed persons. It's in this process that the team of sheriffs were drafted to the scene just to unravel the situation.
After the scene we were brought to another scene where a boy named Joe was alone at home and it's when he was alone that a sheriff officer and a man came to serve them a letter that their residence is up for auction so, when the father came, the boy related the issue to his father whom through his sovereign belief would not even give a damn as to what this letter meant to the them.
Furthermore, we were shown where the man was teaching a group of people against the law of the land. He told this people about their straw man and the real man, he said had it been they know their rights, they wouldn't have become a slave to the rule and law of the land, he admonished them not to give a damn to the government rules which he believed was put in place to enslave the people.
After that, he and his son continued to live with their sovereign belief and on a particular day, when they were travelling together, they were stopped by a police stop and search officer who requested for the man, Jerry's driver's license and registration document, but the man instead of given the man the necessary documents gave the police officer a paper telling him all sorts of things that are against the law.
So, because of his action, he was arrested and put in jail, but later, he was released through a bail condition by his ally, Jess Bouchart.
It's in the process of him being in the jail that his boy started to meet people that changed his perspectives about life and against what his father was teaching. But ever since he had met with people, he totally changed his attitude and relationship with his father.
But even at that, he and his father were still doing things together. Though he tried to warn and convince his father about the court case on the house evacuation, but the stubborn man would listen to his son as he went ahead to appear and defend himself in the court, but at the court, he wouldn't not even allow the judge to preside over the court through his belief, he left the court in the company of his son in anger and at the end, he was evacuated from the house and this was what led to him being arrested for the same offence of drivers license and car registration and it's in the process that his son got two police killed. Though they taught they've escaped, they were later ambushed and killed by the chief sheriff.
ANALYSIS AND SUMMARY
Like I said, the movie was so boring and difficult to understand but even at that, there's one or two lessons to be learnt from the movie and the characters.
I would like to start with the character of Jerry Kane. Jerry Kane through his action and belief was against the law of the land. He believed he's an island on his own but no one is an island as no one can live alone. Though he has some people who he was tutoring on his belief by his side.
But even at that, his belief really contradicted the law of the land. He's an extremist and would not even submit to the law of the land. At some point while watching the movie, I was feeling irritated about the man's behaviour.
Another thing I didn't really like about the man was how he was misinforming people against the law of the land and the government. Doing this to me is an act of felony which should have even got him arrested and jailed for life, but nothing like that was seen in the movie as he was left to move freely in the society.
In addition, bringing up a child with such a belief is another thing that almost made me lose interest in the movie. How would a young boy be brought up that way, what would the society be like when such a boy grows up, it would be a society where such belief would be carried on by the younger generation.
Furthermore, the criminal act of killing the police officers was another pathetic situation in the movie. Though, it's orchestrated and masterminded by the boy but the father was the brain behind the dastardly act as he has always talked about conquering the enemy and this was what came to the boy's mind when he saw his dad being dragged by the police.
Also, the way they were killed was another thing that made the movie uninteresting to me. In my own view, I would have thought that immediately the man was killed, the deputy sheriff supposed to stop shooting since the sound of gun from the other end has subsided, but instead of them to stop shooting, they continued till they killed the young boy, Joe Kane, who in my own opinion was not that guilty of what happened. Though, he was the one that killed the sheriff officers, but it's through what the father said that made him act that way. In my own view, I thought he should have been pardoned and rehabilitated, but he's killed alongside his father.
THEME
We have in the movie, a theme of murder, crime, violence, wrong belief, child abuse, wrong teaching, lack of respect for the law of the land and so on.
The pictures of the movie are crystal clear and the use of music in the background makes it more interesting to watch also, the subtitle is one of the best as it's accurate.
RATING
I would rate the movie 6/10.
Thanks for reading.
