Movie Review: The Rip

There is something nostalgic about seeing Matt Damon and Ben Affleck again on your screen. It feels like a reunion of old friends sipping a couple of bottles of beer and doing the activity they love to do best, but only this time it is acting. I remember the combination of both actors in Good Will Hunting, a beautiful coming-of-age movie, and I remember it because of one of those movie fans who rewatches a movie classic during the festive season, which is exactly what I did last month.

The Rip is simply a crime drama, and there is no better way to put it. It takes about two people to be caught in a dilemma. It focuses on loyalty and, above all, greed in human form. Affleck plays the agent who is worn out by the job, mixed with the recent passing of his girlfriend. It all feels like there is nothing more for him aside from the job he is doing. Then, on the other hand,d Damon plays the team leader of the force, working with the perception that if he is smart enough, he can control any chaotic situation he finds himself in. On his own end, life has dealt him some very bad cards with his marriage and his kid. He is not having it easy either.

The special spice to the movie The Rip is how the story unravels gradually, with events unfolding one after the other. It all boils down to the team of agents that burst stash houses and recover cash from illicit drug activities or crime. But on this day, it is something different and different in the sense of the amount. The movie found at this stash house was more than anybody who expect. It is a whopping sum of 20 million dollars, which is life-changing, and these agents are people working minimum wage, which means that money can change their lives. The dilemma sets in when they have to decide if they are going to keep the cash or call it in. Things get more intense when Damon plays the team lead, who did not call it in immediately as they usually do on other missions.

The lead actors did the job well when it comes to acting, which makes sense why the pay package was so good. Ben Affleck did not perform over the top; rather, he brought out the true light of the character he played with his mannerisms and choice of words for his dialogue, provoking emotions and making the scene get more tense. On the other hand, Matt Damon truly acted like a person in control of a team, even though there were times when one could tell that he was not sure of what was going on, as well, but tried to stay in control of the situation.

The movie was well-paced with the action, and the A-list of actors actually helped, and it was not one of those movies that had a lot of actors but poor action and acting. I could not get over the fact that it is quite intense and challenging to question one's greed, especially when met with that huge sum of cash, when experiencing financial struggle. Go watch the movie, and if you have, what are your thoughts?

I watched this movie yesterday, the storyline is great, the casting is perfect and the way the movie uncovered was really a surprise to me.
I actually thought Damon was the bad guy until the movie was uncovered.
