This phrase is at the core of the movie… and the other movies of karate kid, as well as in the series Cobra Kai. In each of this installments rivalries revolve around or arise over different teaching styles, the Miyagi-do Karate of karate for defense only, and some other form of karate which is more aggressive (or the Miyagi-do in a different path as in the second movie).

So we have mr Miyagi, a peaceful man who avoids fights whenever possible, but he would fight when needed to; and he’s specially sensible when dealing with problems. In all, he’s quite the archetype of the old and wise master who aids a hero in his journey.

His philosophy collides with the philosophies of “strike first, strike hard, no mercy” in the first movie, with fighting for a supposed honor breach in the second movie (the person who felt offended by him hold that grudge for decades), and again against “strike first… in the third installment, whereas in the fourth movie, with a new student, the antagonist is some mixed version of the previous two types, to have, finally, Cobra kai’s strike first as the antagonist in the series of that name, without mr Miyagi by then.

Daniel vs Johnny

This rivalry starts because of jealousy: in Johnny’s eyes at least, Daniel is being too friendly with his ex-girlfriend with whom he still wanted to get back together and hopes for it, so he storms in between them and attacks Daniel, whom returns the hit and despite him wanting it to end it there in a “we’re even” way, Johnny won’t let go of this and he and his karate friends will bully Daniel every other day. When Daniel takes a chance to return some of it, they chase him off and are about to hurt him very very bad when mr Miyagi (Daniel’s apartment handyman) comes in and defeats the guys.
The next day, the two go together to try to make peace at the dojo of Johnny, but sensei Kreese’s bellicosity doesn’t allow that, so they agree to leave Daniel alone to let him train to fight in a tournament against them.

Funnily, Daniel takes the chance to tease them one time when he’s with Ali, knowing they won’t disobey their sensei. On the other hand, Johnny would purposely kiss Ali when he knew Daniel was looking with the latter not realizing at the moment it was against her will. However, that pathetic behaviour from Johnny finishes up for good his relationship with her, whom explains things to Danny and they end up becoming a couple.

Finally, comes the tournament, where Daniel makes it to the final defeating cobra kai students along the way, and Kreese makes one of them hurt him badly in a leg in the semifinals. Daniel fights nonetheless in the final, where Kreese tells Johnny to attack Daniel in the hurt leg (which would be illegal): and here we see even more clearly than we had seen before what mr Miyagi meant by “No such thing bad student. Only bad teacher”, which he had completed with “teacher say, student do”, because Johnny is awestruck and guilty at the thought of doing that, shown only by his face as he doesn’t say anything (applause for the actor there),

but at such face Kreese pressures him with a “any problem with that?”, to which Johnny responds “no” and proceeds to do as told… to end up losing anyway against Daniel’s the crane kick.

Yet, Johnny shows again that he did have a concept of honor that his bad teacher had not been able to extinguish, as he himself gives the trophy to Danny, and if this ended here, Daniel’s journey of the hero would be completed, with his antagonistic rivalry with Johnny having been the greatest obstacle in the journey besides of the battle within. However, this would not be the end of it: it would come back, and greatly done, in the series Cobra Kai where, after many bad stepping which included fights, they’ll end up teaming up and becoming friends...
