Castlevania Nocturne - Review from a fan of the games (Minor Spoilers)

Hey guys from The Anime Realm, I hope you are all doing great. Last weekend I watched Castlevania Nocturne, the new animated series from Netflix, so here is my opinion about it.

First of all, it’s not necessary to have watched the previous original Castlevania series to understand the plot of Nocturne, because this new show is a standalone sequel. Second, these shows are based on a video game franchise that I love and that was the main reason for me to watch them, however, it’s not necessary to have previously played the games to understand both series.

I have to say that the first episodes were not that great for me, mainly because they felt like filler, showing the characters doing uninteresting things. It was from the fourth episode when I felt that the story started to become cool to the end of the ride, the best thing was that the season ends with an impressive and promising cliffhanger.

To talk a little about the plot development and the characters, I have to be honest about something; I didn’t like Richter’s mother’s death. I don’t know why so many North American shows have this weird need to make a child act incompetent in dangerous situations. I think it would have been better for her to simply die because she was fighting a vampire much stronger than her.

Putting that aside, I think Richter has a good development, he is very humanized, the character has to face traumas from the past and also, they don’t show him as a perfect warrior who never fails, he is still learning and the writers make it clear that he has tremendous potential in power, I also liked how they made him charismatic without an overuse of swearing.

Maria, on the other hand, is the character that I liked the most, especially because the family conflicts she has to deal with are very complex and very well linked to the main plot. The best is that even though she is firm she is also sensitive, even with the characters she doesn’t like too much, despite still being a teenager, she never throws a tantrum for absurd reasons.

I also really liked Edouard, he is a very optimistic and kind guy whose story takes a sad turn, through him, the show makes some existential questions that were quite interesting in my opinion, I would’ve wanted for the show to focus a little bit more on him.

When it comes to Annette, I think that she didn’t have a development as interesting as the rest of the heroes, there were times when I felt that she was acting irrationally just to be against the other protagonists, and other times she acted too affectionately to the young vampire hunter, this confused me because she barely knew him, and there are moments where her feelings for Edouard are ambiguous. I also didn’t like that her fighting powers didn’t use deeply the Haitian culture, her abilities seem to come more from something like the legend of Aang or the X-men, since she can manipulate metal and earth.

Something I liked about the main villains and antagonists was that the majority of them have dialogues and are not just cannon fodder for the fights like in the previous series, the best part is that some of them have very ambiguous ways of acting and morally conflicting ideologies because they don’t simply want to destroy humanity like the main villainess.

Another detail that I’m grateful for is that Nocturne finally let aside the overuse of swearing and tedious monologues that were very abundant in the original series. This time the characters only swear when the situation really calls for it, and the tone of the series feels less rough and more refined.

In conclusion, even though I don’t think this animated series is as good as others I’ve seen like Arcane or Vinland Saga. I still think Nocturne is a good and interesting base for what could come, and also it has the potential to be better than its predecessor, I only hope the creators don’t ruin it like they did with the final seasons of the original series.

Anyway, this is all I have to say. Thank you very much for reading and supporting my post if you liked it.

Hello and welcome to The Anime Realm community!

It seems that this series is giving a lot to talk about. While it's true that your impressions of the first chapters were not the best, it seems to be getting better, that's good.

I think it's great that we don't need to know the game or have seen other series to watch Nocturne, that certainly gives us encouragement.

Thanks for sharing! Hope to see you soon! Best regards!

Yeah, the series has some flaws but it still interesting. It is cool that everyone can enjoy it without knowing the games or the original animation.

Thank you so much for taking the time of commenting and supporting me. This seems like a nice anime anime fans community.

Hope you have a nice day!

This is a strong point "Nocturne"; there is no need to have seen the previous series; the only thing I found pleasing is that having seen the previous series, I could take as a reference Richter's behavior as that of his ancestor Belmont, that made me sympathize even more with the current hero who like all the others have suffered from strong traumas, I think that is why it is necessary that he has witnessed the death of his mother and that he doubts about his obligation to be a hunter of creatures of the night.

I liked the first season, I thought it was great in many ways and I hope they announce the second season quickly.

I agree with that, just hope the writers fixes the pacing issues in further seasons if the show is renewed, because it is getting a mixed reception from the audience who liked it the previous animation and some fans of the games.

Well, from the drawings it catches my attention, and from what you describe in your post I'll keep it in mind too but I'll give it a chance. I'll take the opportunity to see it then.
