Jurassic World Rebirth
I enjoyed this overall. The writing wasn’t great—just serviceable—and there was no real character development, but the visuals were fantastic. Edwards is great at making a film look beautiful, and in that regard, this really delivered.
I expected better from Koepp, and my dad pointed out that this is, in some ways, a Lost World rehash—lol. Still, the visuals are definitely the film’s strongest point. Scarlett and Jonathan were fun, and despite the family being underdeveloped, I liked Luna Blaise. There’s some genuinely good tension throughout, and the overall vibe is fun, even if the plot could’ve been more interesting.
That said, it essentially undoes what the World trilogy built up to—which, as someone who likes that trilogy, felt silly, especially since it was all dismissed in a text crawl—lol. I wanted to love this more, but as a cinematography/visuals junkie, I still had a great time.
The nautical horror sequences with the Mosasaur and the Spinosaurus quintet were actually some of the best moments this franchise has had since the original film. But once we get to the island, the story becomes dull. It just felt like a video game to me: first level, Mosasaurus; second level, Titansaurus; and so on.
I really liked the design of the weird mutant gorilla-dinosaur thing, though it came out of nowhere. The Spinosaurus quintet returning at the end when they’re at the dock would’ve made more sense.
Visually, the film was stunning, and it had some nice little flourishes I appreciated. Not a great film, but definitely a fun one.
